More than 5,600 flights were canceled by airlines around the world over the Christmas weekend due to the spread of the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Ómicron , according to data from the ‘website’ FlighAware.
This Sunday alone, until 13:40 (Lisbon time), there were almost 2,500 flight cancellations, 850 of which with origin or destination in the USA.

United Airlines had to cancel 439 flights between Friday and Saturday, 10% of which were scheduled.
“The peak of those infected with Ómicron throughout the country, during this week, had a direct impact on our crews”, pointed out United Airlines, cited by Agence France Presse (AFP).
Delta Airlines, in turn, canceled 170 flights on Friday and 280 today.
At least a dozen Alaska Airlines flights were also canceled after employees were “potentially exposed to the virus”.
Covid-19 has caused more than 5.38 million deaths worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest report by the Agence France-Presse.
A new variant, Ómicron, classified as of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been detected in southern Africa, but since the South African health authorities gave the alert, on 24 November, infections were reported in at least 89 countries on all continents, including Portugal.
