Criminals hunt for your citizen service number: this is how telephone scams work

That’s a bit of a shock: you receive an (English) phone call from the central government because there is an arrest warrant against you. To clear up this misunderstanding, they only need your social security number or some money. Don’t fall for this new form of phone scam.

Calling scammers are chasing your social security number number

The Fraud Helpdesk says that reports have recently been received of cyber criminals posing over the telephone as the ‘Dutch National Police’ (police) or ‘Dutch Supreme Court’ (the Supreme Court of the Netherlands).

When people record, they hear an English recorded tape. The calls come from random Dutch mobile numbers. It also happens that it seems that the criminals are calling from the Supreme Court or central government.

This is absolutely not the case. In reality, the scammers have “spoofed” the government numbers. It seems as if you are being called by the legitimate telephone number of the Supreme Court or central government.

BSN oplichting telefoon

This is how the phone scam works

What the cyber criminals ultimately want is different. In most cases, the telephone scammers try to get your BSN code.

Sometimes you are also warned that you have a warrant for your arrest. The Fraud Helpdesk also writes that some Dutch people are accused of criminal activities, such as drug trafficking and money laundering.

You then have to enter a number on your telephone, usually 1, after which you will be put through to an ’employee’ of the police or Supreme Court. This person wants to verify your identity using personal information.

You will then be advised to ‘secure’ your money by transferring it to a specific account number. Of course this is the account number of the criminals.

What do the scammers want?

The cyber criminals have a clear goal: money. In most cases, they try to extort money from victims by threatening them. For example, if you do not cooperate with the investigation, you would have to go to jail.

The cyber criminals also try to steal as much personal information as possible. This data can be used, for example, to commit fraud with credit cards. They hereby make purchases in your name.

You must (not) do this

Hang up as soon as you pick up the phone and hear the English recorded tape. Are you still playing the tape? In any case, do not participate in the role play of the scammers. For example, do not press number 1 when prompted.

It is therefore best to hang up immediately. You can then make a

report to the Dutch Fraud Helpdesk. This organization tries to protect people and companies from fraud.

Secure your phone

The last one For months, more and more forms of cyber scams are appearing. For example, the new

    BRATA malware

tries to steal banking information from phones. Then the device is (remotely) reset.

It is therefore important to protect your phone as well as possible. Take a look at our
