Death Note, Inuyasha VA French Tickner Has Passed Away

There’s sad news as it was revealed that prolific stage, TV, film and voice actor French Tickner passed away recently. Anime fans would probably know him best from playing Watari in Death Note, Dozle Zabi in Mobile Suit Gundam, and Kagome’s grandfather in Inuyasha.

The Vancouver Sun listed his obituary. He died on his ninety-first birthday, August 26. A cause of death was not given.

The obituary said he wants to be recalled as “A man of the theater” and talked about how he had been singing and acting since he was young, and got a Bachelor’s degree in music.

“In 1963 he was invited to Vancouver BC by Dr Welton Marquis, to help establish the UBC School of Music where he headed Opera/Voice for over 25 years,” the obituary explained. “His career in film, television and voiceover work spanned decades. He was Santa Claus, Chef Boy-are-Dee, the judge, the dirty old man, and too many other rapscallions to list.”

It also explained in a tongue-in-cheek way that his mother’s last name had been French before she got married, which was how he got his unique first name.

There’s not going to be a service, abiding by his request. His wife and his brother both passed away before him.

Besides the titles listed above, Tickner had roles in the anime Black Lagoon, Galaxy Angel, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Individual Eleven, Human Crossing, Jin-Roh – The Wolf Brigade, MegaMan NT Warrior, New Adventures of Kimba The White Lion, Ranma ½, Story of Saiunkoku, and more.

He also did voice acting for Madeline: Lost in Paris, Madeline: My Fair Madeline, The New Adventures of Madeline, Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes, Barbie in the Nutcracker, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and In Search of Santa.
