At least 17 people have been killed and 59 others injured in Ghana after a truckload of explosives exploded. That happened in the west of the country, where the truck with explosives was probably on its way to a gold mine.
Hundreds of buildings were damaged, the death toll could rise further. The truck collided with a motorcyclist, after which the explosives exploded. That happened near the mining town of Bogoso in the West African country.
Five hundred buildings destroyed
Images on social media, which cannot be verified, show that the damage is extensive. A government official reports that at least 500 buildings have been destroyed.
Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo tweeted that he had been informed of the “tragic accident”. A spokesperson for the mining company also confirms the accident.
