Disney + in France: catalog, Star, price, news … everything you need to know about Netflix's competitor

Disney + has been in France for over a year, and its Star section since early 2021. How much is this new subscription worth? What are all the series, films, documentaries and cartoons in its catalog, each month? Are there a lot of new things? Do you have to go through Canal + in France to use it? How can you watch Disney + on your TV? Here is everything you need to know about the new video on demand subscription platform (SVOD)

After many months of waiting, Disney + arrived in France in April 2020. Then, a year later, the subscription video on demand (SVOD) platform has changed, welcoming the new Star section, dedicated to content aimed at a more adult audience , and increasing its rates by two euros per month.

Now, it has 116 million monthly paying subscribers , which makes ‘it the second most powerful streaming video service after market leader Netflix – although the two are not that comparable.

The service is directly accessible on the Disney + website or via Android or iOS applications on mobile. It is possible to consult the service on a television by doing a few manipulations, or by going through Disney + in Canal + , which has forged strong partnerships with Mickey’s firm.

New films and series on Disney + France in October 2021

Each month, Disney + is putting new exclusive content online in France. There aren’t many, because the platform is very dependent on its editorial line and has decided to respect the chronology of the French media

, which prevents it from posting films online for 36 months after their theatrical release. But for a few months now, she has had her own original Marvel series, like WandaVision , Falcon and the Winter Soldier or Loki , which feed its catalog well.

This October 2021, Disney + welcomes new features such as season 32 of The Simpsons, series

The Fosters or Reservation Dogs , but also French films like 20 years apart Where Les Petits Mouchoirs.

Star has arrived, with new price for Disney + at 8.99 euros per month

The amount of the subscription to Disney + increased to 8.99 euros per month from 23 February 2021. This is what we learned on December 10, during Investor Day organized by the multinational, one year after the launch of the SVOD platform in the United States.

The reason for this change is in the new section called Star which has been added to the catalog offered by the SVOD service. There is more adult content, like what Americans can watch on the Hulu platform, which belongs to the Disney group.

On January 4, Disney unveiled the first titles which will be in its Star section , protected by parental controls . Since then, we have known almost all of the films and series that will be in Star (250 films and documentaries and around forty series).

There are classics ( 24, Desperate Housewives, Lost ) but also some exclusives in France like Black-ish , or those of the American platform Hulu: Love Victor and Solar Opposites.

Parental controls on Disney +

Parental controls have drastically changed on Disney + : it is now possible to configure in a very thorough way the different age classifications according to the profiles that you have created on the platform. We have produced a complete tutorial, separately, to guide you in this task.

Exclusive French series on Disney +

This is an important step for Disney + : February 16, 2021, the platform unveiled its first 4 100% original French series , which will be produced and broadcast by Disney. There is no release date for this new content yet, because some projects are still at the casting stage, but we already know the main lines:

  • Oussekine : a dramatic mini-series on the death of Malik Oussekine following police violence in the 1980s;
  • Soprano : a series docu on the French rapper;
  • Parallels : teenagers who travel in parallel universes;
  • Family Weekend : a comedy about a blended family.
  • The first two will be available in the Star section, while the other two, more family-friendly, will be accessible in Disney + from any profile.

    What is Disney +?

    Disney + is a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform, which means that subscribers pay a fixed amount per month to have access to a catalog of streaming video content, accessible in an unlimited way. This is a different concept from VOD (video on demand) which allows you to pay individually for content (for example by paying 3 euros to rent a film, or 10 euros to buy it dematerialized).

    The service therefore operates on the same principle as Netflix, launched in France in 2014, Canal + Séries, or even Salto, the future French platform (which should however mix part of SVOD with part of broadcasting live channels).

    Disney + has an openly very “ family ”, unlike Netflix, which does not really have its own editorial line , but sees itself more as a large supermarket which offers a variety of content so that all of its subscribers can find their way around. The two giants are often compared to each other, although they have very different postulates, catalogs and offers. To help you see it more clearly, we have written

    a great comparison of Disney + and Netflix offers .

    Disney + and the story of a delayed launch

    In mid-March 2020, the government asked Disney + “ to adjust its offer on the market “, according to Echoes , lest European internet networks be overloaded due to the influx of internet connections. Video is indeed what consumes the most bandwidth on the net, far ahead of everything else, and the infrastructure of Disney + have specific features that worried the public authorities. It is for this reason that the SVOD platform has agreed to postpone its launch for two weeks in France.

    The date of March 24 has, however, been maintained for other European countries such as ‘Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom – where Disney has however committed to reducing its flow.

    A week earlier, recklessness still reigned; rumors were rife on the possibility for Disney to advance the launch of its platform, because of the situation related to the epidemic of coronavirus in France which pushes residents to stay confined to their homes. ” We are sorry that we cannot bring the launch of Disney + forward ”, announced Disney + on Twitter. ” We received messages on social networks, asking us to bring forward the launch date . Unfortunately, it was not possible ”, confirmed to World Kevin Mayer, in charge of consumer strategy at Disney. Those days now seem a long way off.

    Disney first announced its Disney + subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service almost a year ago, on April 11, 2019, during a conference with its shareholders, expressing its very high ambitions in the online video. Since then, the American multinational has continued to confirm its status as a serious competitor to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other current platforms.

    The SVOD service was launched in a few countries such as the United States on November 12, 2019, and will soon arrive in France and Europe. Cost of subscription, interface, content: here is everything we know about Disney’s future SVOD service.

    When was Disney + released in France?

    Disney + is available since November 12, 2019 in the United States, Canada, No uvelle Zealand and the Netherlands. For the rest of Europe, we have to be more patient. The deployment program that Disney had announced was between February and May 2020: it is finally at the very beginning of the summer that Disney + arrives with us.

    In France, the Disney + offer is available since April 7, 2020 : the multinational first announced that it was bringing forward the launch of its offer by one week, which was originally scheduled for on March 31, 2020 , as in the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy. None of these countries will benefit from a launch sooner than expected, despite the coronavirus epidemic affecting many states in the European Union. On the contrary, Disney explained that France would finally know a postponement of two weeks to avoid any risk of bandwidth saturation.

    Disney + is delaying its launch

    Kevin Mayer, president in charge of customer relations, argued that others European countries would have access to Disney + on March 24 as planned, but under increased surveillance: “ In anticipation of ‘high demand for Disney +, we are proactively implementing measures to reduce overall bandwidth usage by at least 25% in countries launching Disney + on March 24 ”, can we ire in the official press release.

    Disney has also announced that its SVOD service will arrive at least in Belgium, Portugal and the Scandinavian countries in the summer of 2020.

    – Michael Schneider (@franklinavenue) April 11, 2019

    Disney plans to have between 60 and 90 million subscribers by 2024. In 2019, Netflix had 1 58 million subscribers worldwide , having enjoyed the status of leader for years.

    The arrival of Disney + in Europe

    France is the only country where Disney has postponed its launch, request of the French government, which justified this requirement by technical questions – while others underlined the underlying power games with the French operators.

    Disney + a en revenge was launched on March 24 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. In total, the application would have been downloaded 5 million times in 24 hours, iOS and Android combined noted the Figaro after a press release from

    App Annie

    (reference on app download statistics), this which gives an idea of the interest of the populations for the SVOD service, but is not a reliable indicator to gauge exactly the number of users (for example, several people can download the application and use the same account, given that there can be up to 7 profiles per subscription). Disney + and the Indian case

    In India, Disney + was launched by surprise on March 11, 2020. It is about ‘a somewhat special arrival, because the multinational decided to go through an application that already existed, and was very popular, Hotstar, which belongs to it. Disney + content has been added to Hotstar, which has been renamed Hotstar Disney + for the occasion, with a redesign of its interface. But, a few hours later, the multinational had finally made an about-face, specifying that it was in fact only to be a “ test ”limited.

    On March 20, 2020, Disney then made a bigger decision: postpone the official launch of Disney + in India, for an unexpected reason : the postponement of the annual cricket championship, which is extremely popular in India. Disney hoped to build on the success of the Indian Premier League, viewable in Hotstar, to interest subscribers to its Disney + content. There is no new official release date yet.

    Then finally, April 3, 2020, Disney + officially launched in India with a very competitive price of 18.5 euros per year (compared to 69.99 euros in Europe), and without based on the Indian Premier League,

    Disney + in the Middle East and North Africa

    Disney + will be available in 17 countries in North Africa and the Middle East starting April 9, Reuters revealed on April 2. This is an exclusive partnership with the broadcaster OSN, which will allow the broadcasting of content from the SVOD platform on pay channels and in streaming.

    What is the price of Disney + in France?

    Since mid-January, it was necessary to count 6.99 euros per month (or £ 5.99 in the United Kingdom) or 69.99 euros per year (59, £ 99), but the subscription then increased with Star, to 8.99 euros per month , thanks to this new, more extensive catalog.

    The prices of Disney + have changed since February 2021, to have access to more adult content. The annual subscription is worth 89.99 euros since February 23, 2021 for new subscribers.

    The offer is non-binding, which means that customers can unsubscribe whenever they want. “ The termination will take effect at the end of the current billing period “, To specified Disney in a tweet.

    International prices are more or less the same: 8 , $ 99 per month or $ 69.99 per year (or $ 5.75 per month) in the United States, and 8.99 euros per month in the Netherlands.

    In the United States, Disney also offers a bundle subscription with its three SVOD services : Disney +, Hulu and ESPN + (for sports), for less than $ 13 per month – this offer does not exist with us.

    How to watch Disney + in France

    Disney + is available on:

    • Site desktop ;
    • Tablet ;
    • Mobile;
    • Consoles;
    • Connected televisions

    In France, Disney + is available in OTT (on mobile, tablet and computer) but also via internet boxes thanks to the unprecedented partnership with Canal + , announced on December 14.

    In France, there will therefore be two ways of watching Disney + :

    Disney + will also have exclusive content that is in production, including several series about superheroes ( Loki , the Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Hawkeyee, Winter Soldier) but also Star Wars series like The Mandalorian , which aired one episode per week starting November 12. “ Disney will launch in November with over 25 original series and 10 original films and documentaries ”, affirmed the company in a press release. The catalog announced is over 7,500 episodes of series and 500 films.

    The French Disney + catalog unveiled

    In France, the catalog is necessarily more hazardous. due to the law on the chronology of the media which imposes a certain number of constraints on the platforms of SVOD, in term of delay before being able to recover a film after its release in theaters, which can extend up to 36 months according to the multinational’s financial investments in French fiction – which are almost non-existent for the moment.

    Some Disney + exclusives at its launch in France // Source: Disney +

    On March 6, 2020, Disney presented in a press release all the series, films and cartoons that would be available in its French catalog when it launches on March 24. There is a lot of cold content, through its different brands and franchises (Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic).

    We have compiled in another article all of the titles present in Disney + France: there are a lot of cartoons and films, as well as the 30 seasons of Simpson but also 26 “original creations which will not exist anywhere else.

    The original Disney + series

    A weekly broadcast for the original series

    To compensate for this little “fresh” content, Disney + has also decided to reproduce its strategy American gie in France, and broadcast the episodes of his series The Mandalorian on a weekly basis; a strategy that may seem sluggish because it will de facto create a difference in treatment between French subscribers and American subscribers, who will nevertheless pay the same price for their subscription.

    In a press release dated March 19, 2020 , Disney gave more details on the release dates :

    The other original series will also be released slowly, with one episode every Friday. This is what we saw for WandaVision , but also Loki , which became the first series in the MCU to have a sequel .

    Disney + Problems

    It seems that the very “family” positioning of Disney + poses some concerns in terms of creative choices. Recently the reboot announced from Lizzie McGuire , the 2000s series, was put on hiatus after the showrunner was fired by Disney. Actress Hilary Duff has suggested that she would like the project not to be for Disney +, but to be transferred to Hulu, the multinational’s other SVOD platform, which is aimed at a more adult audience.

    Lizzie McGuire // Source: Disney Channel

    It must be said that Disney had already made this decision concerning two other productions: adaptations in series of the book High Fidelity and the movie Love, Simon were both transferred to Hulu before their launch, because they contained too many swear words and references to sexuality. ” The senior executives were not comfortable with the idea of inserting this into the Disney + Family Catalog ”, sums up the Hollywood Reporter. Paradoxically, the series The Simpsons , which is also in the Disney + catalog, is nevertheless very cynical and does not hesitate to play on the provocative fiber – but in view of the success of the series of animation, Disney couldn’t imagine doing it without its 30 seasons, which is a big plus up its sleeve.

    In addition to these choices, Disney also reportedly canceled three series in development, including one based on the universe of Tron .

    Does Disney + censor movies and cartoons?

    Since Disney + is available in France, we have been able to discover some changes that have been made to Disney films to ensure that ‘they corr espondent to the “family” spirit desired by the platform. If some cartoons have been modified a long time ago because they could carry dangerous or racist messages , it seems that at least one of them, the movie Splash , has been edited expressly for Disney +: false hair has been added to cover the buttocks of actress Daryl Hannah , which can be seen in the original version

    The clash between Disney + and Scarlett Johansson

    Disney will pay Scarlett Johansson several million because of Disney + : the actress estimated, in the summer of 2021, that the broadcast on the streaming platform of Black Widow would have harmed him financially (because fewer visits to theaters), and that his image would have been used to advertise at Disney +.

    The Disney + interface

    The French platform, as we have seen by trying it on April 7, 2020, is exactly similar to the American version. A very classic and uncluttered homepage shows ‘Featured’ content in banner form, with several Disney franchises below (Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic).

    The Simpsons in Disney + France // Source: Capture Numerama

    In the menu bar, we see a Search function, a list of content (those that you will put on hold so as not to forget them) but also three categories of content: films, series and ” originals ”.

    A search for “Star Wars” in Disney + France // Source: Capture Numerama

    At level Water of the “files” of each content, the interface of Disney + really resembles other competitors like Netflix, with a raw presentation, rather sober and which seems functional.

    Finding Nemo on Disney + // Source: Numerama

    The tabs at the top of the home page show the import emphasis given to the user’s “waiting list”, as well as the highlighting of original Disney + content – which, we should remember, however few at the French launch.

    Some unknown features of interface

    We have grouped together, in a separate article, four unknown features on Disney + but which can be very useful :

    • How to change the size, font and color of subtitles;
    • How to turn off autoplay of the next episode;
  • How to display bonuses related to video content (making-off, cut scenes, etc);
  • How does choose the quality of the videos you want to download on mobile or tablet
  • 4K on Disney +?

    Disney + normally offers content in 4K , which is a huge plus for lovers of good quality video. However, it is not certain that the content available is all in very high definition: Disney specifies that there is “ ultra high definition on a selection of content ”. The multinational, on the other hand, will block smartphones without Widevine L1 , the Google system on Android.

    It should be noted that none Disney + movie or series will not be available in 4K “during the duration of the confinement ”, specified the platform in its press release . Indeed, as in Europe, the speed will be reduced to minimize the risk of Internet network saturation.

    We proactively implement measures to reduce overall bandwidth usage by at least 25% (similar to what we have done in other European countries). pic.twitter.com/LaXs2a1AG8

    How to download Disney + content to your smartphone?

    According to Kevin Mayer, it is possible to download “ all content ”- but only on smartphones and tablets. Remember that Netflix, for example, also only allows you to download certain videos, and only on mobile.

    It is possible to download content on your mobile, without any limit – which is not the case on Netflix where only certain films and certain series can be downloaded on smartphone.

    As noted by our colleagues from Frandroid

    , just go to the Disney + app, then:

    • Click on your profile;
    • Go to Settings;
    • Go to TV uploads;
    • Choose the quality (normal, medium and high) of the recorded content.

    You can choose if you want the download to be done only in Wi- Fi, as well as the location where you want the contents to be stored (on the smartphone directly or on an SD card if you have one).
