Disposable packaging material 'NO'… “Buy only what you need”

Seoul ‘Zero Market’ 1st store opened on the 21st… Local government’s first case

Purchase in a multi-use container such as detergent
Reduce household waste and protect the environment
Trial installation in large distribution stores
Also operated as a ‘resource circulation base facility’

A zero-waste store where you can purchase refillable products such as detergent, shampoo, and cosmetics in a multi-use container. ‘Zero Market’ will appear in 10 places including department stores, chain supermarkets (SSM), and apartment complexes in downtown Seoul.

Seoul is the first among 17 cities and provinces to operate a zero-waste store within a large retail store. In Zero Market, products are purchased in a dedicated container provided in the store or in a multi-use container brought by an individual. Because packaging materials such as disposable plastic cups and containers are not used, household waste can be reduced and the environment can be protected. Starting next year, the Zero Market will be opened sequentially at NC Department Store Gangseo and GS The Fresh Godeok Gracium until January next year. After six months of pilot operation, the city plans to cooperate with large retailers so that it can be spread to department stores and marts with a large floating population and excellent accessibility and convenience.

Priority 10 zero markets are evenly distributed throughout Seoul so that all citizens can experience zero waste culture. Zero Market It is created as a specialized space that reflects the characteristics of each distribution store. The Homeplus World Cup store collects and recycles plastic shopping carts, and the NC Department Store Gangseo store collaborates with instant food stores to carry out packaging events in multi-use containers instead of disposables. GS The Fresh Godeok Grasium branch, located in the apartment complex, operates an automatic refill station without a cashier.

is operated Even though the recycling value is high, earphones and charging cables that are thrown away as household waste are recovered and recycled, and shopping paper bags and glass bottles are collected and shared.

After the pilot operation is completed, the Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to autonomously operate the Zero Market at each distribution company. We plan to discover and support refill shops and subdivision shops to encourage the participation of more retail stores and to expand small-scale zero-waste stores in the region. We are also promoting ‘business agreements to spread eco-friendly consumption culture without disposable packaging’ with large retailers such as Homeplus, E-Land Detail, and GS Retail.

Through ‘Zero Forest’ (Seoul Upcycling Plaza), a space where you can experience zero waste outside, and ‘Smart Seoul Map’, which provides information on the location of about 70 zero-waste stores in Seoul, citizens can promote a consumption culture without packaging materials.

Yoo Yeon-sik, head of the Climate Environment Division, said, “It will be an opportunity to popularize zero-waste.”
