Over the years, DJ Shimza has worked with several artists in the music industry including Mzansi’s Moonchild Sanelly, Ami Faku and the energetic Dr Malinga. The talented producer and businessman teamed up with four-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo and remixed her 1994 hit Agolo.
ANGÉLIQUE KIDJO’S ‘AGOLO’
Singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo kicked off her music career as a young girl in Benin. Having released more than 10 albums in her career, the 61-year-old is one of Africa’s best voices.
Her 1994 single Agolo formed part of her second album Aye. She was nominated for a Grammy Award the following year in the Best Music Video category.
Speaking to Cape Argus in 2017, Kidjo explained that Agolo has a different meaning depending on the circumstance.
“Agolo is one of those words. It means ‘please’ and also ‘pay attention’. You hear it a lot in the market when someone has a big load on their head then they go ‘agolo, agolo, agolo’ when means ‘pay attention, make way, I want to pass.’”
“I called that song Agolo because Mother Nature demands some attention from us. There is no other earth that we can go and live on if we destroy this one.”
