Double step for the harvest

MATANZAS.-There is tension in the sugar sector. A not insignificant number of plants started grinding with a marked delay, and others are still “stuck” to start it or have interrupted the activity of their machines for various reasons.

This explains that, when there are hardly any a few days before the end of January, the country has not yet reached 100,000 tons of sugar. Referring to this complicated beginning of the conflict, Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa noted that this has been a very difficult harvest to ensure with the necessary resources and supplies, due to financial and economic limitations. This mishap, he commented, has influenced the quality of the repairs in the mills.

During a tour of this province, the also member of the Political Bureau made clear his conviction that the workers in the sector they will let themselves be defeated; a sign of optimism that is based, for example, on what the sugar growers themselves say. “We have started late, but the people here are willing to speed up the march. We are going to continue to improve to make up for lost time with more work”, he expressed, proud of his center, Fidel Ricardo Leyva, who works in the jogger area at Jesús Rabí, in Calimete.

Although Appreciated that spirit in each place visited, in his exchanges with sugar producers in the territory, Valdés Mesa insisted that the only possibility of discounting the time lost in the current harvest is the route of efficiency and high and stable grinds.

Do everything with the highest possible quality, there are the largest reserves, he stressed, after also recalling that there is little cane and low agricultural yields.

He recalled that the measures approved to favor this transformation, they must be reverted to more sugar as soon as possible.

He said that the sugar industry is obliged to return to the culture of work that characterized it, to take on the challenge of planting more cane, raising agricultural and industrial yields and produce more sugar, without ruling out the use of derivatives, diversify production and solve the technological backwardness of some plants.
