Download for free – Risk of infection

How good is your corona protection? How dangerous is it actually indoors at the moment? A free MIT app promises individual calculations of the risk of corona infection.

Opinions differ as to how high the risk of infection with Corona is. From “Corona doesn’t exist” to “we will all die” every facet is represented. But it is clear that numerous factors must be taken into account in order to assess the personal corona infection risk. The free app CoVis attempts a scientifically based risk assessment. The app was created at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and is supported by the German Electron Synchrotron DESY. The app combines public data about Covid, for example from Johns Hopkins University and the Robert Koch Institute, with personal information and the whereabouts and thus provides an individual assessment of the current risk with recommendations for action.Very interesting: If you tap on “More” in the app, you can read the current level of immunity on a colored bar, i.e. how strong the individual Protection is straight.

  • Answer questions first

A young, healthy home office worker in the Black Forest has a different risk of contracting Corona than an older bus driver with previous illnesses in New Delhi. In order to be able to make individual assessments, you have to feed the app with personal data. They are asked in a question-and-answer game – it’s about age, gender, work situation, but also state of health, medication, lifestyle, current behavior such as wearing a mask and also the vaccination status. This information is combined with data on the local infection process using machine learning. A daily risk value is calculated from this. This can be tracked in the CoVis app via a timeline. In addition to graphics showing the development of the number of cases in the specified region, the app also attempts a 7-day forecast. The app also gives travel advice. Users just select a country from the list and then information about quarantine, tests and current news is displayed.

Personal data remain on the Mobile

The app needs a lot of personal data to assess the risk, such as age, gender, state of health or information about previous illnesses. The personal data is therefore processed. The makers state that this should only happen on mobile phones. Contact tracking as with the Corona-Warn-App does not take place with CoVis. The app retrieves data from the CoVis project , such as infection numbers or current study results. This information flows to the smartphone to calculate the risk. A look at the privacy settings of the iOS app shows that US data protection law applies to the app. Locations and device information are at least stored anonymously. The provider also reserves the right to “process data for other business purposes”. In addition, there is a passage about data transfer to third parties if the legal form of the company changes. For our taste, this is formulated too laxly.A brief analysis of the Android app shows that the tracker Google Firebase Analytics is used and the app gets up to 37 permissions if necessary. The app offers the option of creating a user account if desired. However, this is not absolutely necessary for the function, but makes it possible to take the data with you when you change your cell phone. There is also a button next to it to delete all data.
