At least 100 people were killed or injured on Friday in a serious explosion in a mosque visited by Shiites in northern Afghanistan. An official from the ruling Taliban police force, Dost Mohammad Obaida, said the majority of the people had died.
The explosion occurred during Friday prayers in the mosque in Kunduz province. No one confessed to the fact, but the terrorist organization Islamic State has repeatedly attacked Shiite Muslims in the past. If the death toll from the attack is confirmed, this would be the highest in an attack by militant forces since the US and NATO troops left Afghanistan at the end of August and the Taliban took control of the country.
The Islamist Taliban see themselves challenged by a growing threat from the local branch of ISIS. ISIS members recently intensified their attacks, including two deadly attacks in the capital, Kabul. The religious minorities in Afghanistan were also attacked by IS.
