Eagles vs. Commanders odds, spread, line: Monday Night Football picks, predictions by advanced NFL model

The Washington Commanders must get rolling if they have any hope for the playoffs, but they will face a tall task in a Monday Night Football road matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders (4-5) had a chance to move above .500 last week, taking a 17-7 lead over the Vikings in the fourth quarter, but Minnesota rallied for a 20-17 victory. The Eagles (8-0) played on Thursday Night Football in Week 9, when they got off to a slow start and were tied with the NFL’s worst team at halftime. They rallied in the second half, forcing two turnovers and cruising to a 29-17 victory. The Eagles started quickly in the last meeting between these teams at FedEx Field in Week 3. They took a 24-0 lead into halftime, finished with nine sacks, and closed out a 24-8 victory. Philadelphia has won nine of the past 11 meetings and is going for the second straight season sweep of its NFC East rival.

Philadelphia is favored by 11 in the latest Eagles vs. Commanders odds from Caesars Sportsbook, and the over/under is 43.5. Before making any Commanders vs. Eagles picks, you need to see the MNF predictions and betting advice from the computer simulation model at SportsLine.

Why the Eagles can cover

Receiver A.J. Brown came to Philadelphia this offseason and quickly established himself in the offense. Brown is a surehanded, physical playmaker who knows how to create separation. The Ole Miss product is also a strong blocker and beast with the ball in his hands in the open field. The 2020 Pro Bowler is sixth in the NFL in receiving yards (718), tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns (six), and fifth in yards per reception (16.7).

Tight end Dallas Goedert has been a strong weapon over the middle of the field. Goedert is a polished pass-catcher who piles up chuck plays. The South Dakota State product has a wide wingspan that allows him to reel in contested catches on a consistent basis. Goedert’s size (6-foot-5, 256 pounds) makes him a legit red-zone threat. He’s second on the team in catches (40) and receiving yards (521) with two touchdowns. See which team to pick here.

Why the Commanders can cover

The underdog is 3-1-1 against the spread in the past five meetings, and Washington is 4-4-1 ATS this season but 3-0-1 ATS in its past four. Taylor Heinicke hasn’t been putting up huge numbers, but the team has rallied behind him since he replaced the injured Carson Wentz. He has five TD passes over his three starts, and the Commanders won two of them and led late in the other one. The Eagles’ defensive weakness is against the run, where they allow more than 121 yards per game (20th in NFL). They gave up 139 yards to Texans rookie running back Dameon Pierce last week.

The Commanders have a promising rookie of their own in Brian Robinson, and Antonio Gibson can run the ball or do damage on short passes. Robinson has 219 rushing yards in five games, while Gibson has 567 total yards. They could open lanes up for Terry McLaurin (609 yards) and Curtis Samuel (45 receptions). Washington’s defense ranks 14th in total yards allowed (331) and is 10th against the run (113). Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen have combined for 10 sacks and Hurts has gone down 22 times. See which team to pick here.
