Emmerdale star Bhasker Patel has been involved in a number of dramatic storylines since he first arrived in the Yorkshire Dales in 2011 playing the role of Rishi Sharmas.
Just this week he threatens to jeopardise his son’s wedding, Jai (played by Chris Bisson) in a shocking turn of events, leaving a swirl of sadness through the village.
An hour long episode of Emmerdale airs on Thursday, 27 July, with Rishi at the forefront of the storyline.
But away from the tight-knit community, the soap star leads a drama-free life with his two stunning daughters and also has a rather note-worthy acting career.
Recognised acting career
The 67 year old who hails from Uganda has an impressive background in acting.
Before and during his time in Emmerdale, Bhasker has a long list of films he’s starred in, including the likes of Thunderbirds (2004), Anuvahood (2011) and Snowden (2016).
His roles in the filming industry led him to be nominated with his team at the Alternative Film Festival (AltFF) in 2020 as the Best Cast for their roles in Jenna The Great.
Bhasker was also nominated for a jury award in 2021 at the British Short Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor in Shear and again for Best Acting Ensemble in the same film.
He’s also appeared in a host of TV soaps and dramas over the years including the likes of Holby City, The Bill, Spooks, Only Fools and Horse, Birds of a Feather, Coronation Street, My Family, Skins and Doctor Who.
Proud father of two
Away from set, he’s proven to be a true family man, often sharing proud photos of his two daughters with his almost 20K Instagram followers.
Last year he gushed over his daughter, Maya as he attended her graduation ceremony after completing her BA in painting at Camberwell College of Arts.
Beaming with pride the father posted a snap of Maya in her graduation gown and wrote: “So proud of our beautiful daughter Maya celebrating her graduation ceremony”, followed by a string of heart emojis.
Bhasker has also shared snaps of his daughter, Kiri who is also a graduate having finished with a distinction in Musical Theatre.
Prompting the actor to post another heartfelt message last year, he wrote: “Tears of joy today for my daughter Kiri achieving such amazing exam results after such an incredibly difficult year. So proud of you, a distinction in Music is something to be very proud of. Time for a long overdue new chapter, studying Musical Theatre. Enjoy every moment!”.
Charity work
Away from family and acting, Bhasker has been heavily involved in supporting a number of causes that are close to his heart.
In February last year, he led a campaign to raise awareness of male sexual assault as he partnered up with the charity SurvivorsUK, which helps boys and men who have been victims of sexual abuse.
In a film titled SAFE, Bhasker documented the story of a man experiencing abuse and followed three men at different stages of their lives sharing the same abuse story.
Bhasker was joined by actors Vic Zander, who has appeared in Emmerdale and Isaac Money, who appeared in award winning film Cat Skin.
Meka Beresford, Digital Communications Officer at SurvivorsUK, said: “Working alongside Dan, House of Create, the Media Trust and the incredible actors on this project was such a joyful experience.
“Dan truly poured his heart and soul into creating a film that accurately depicts the experiences of so many survivors of sexual abuse.” We hope this film will go far in helping people to understand the impact that sexual violence can have on men, whilst also highlighting that support services like SurvivorsUK exist.”
