England and USA played out a goalless draw on Saturday in front of the biggest crowd ever seen at a women’s international friendly match.
Emma Hayes’ return to London drew an attendance of 78,346 at England’s national stadium as the world’s top-ranked teams failed to find a breakthrough.
The USWNT were largely the more threatening side, but clear-cut chances were scarce and England goalkeeper Mary Earps performed well when called upon. At the other end, Alyssa Naeher — who will bow out from international football this year — secured a 10th clean sheet in 2024, the most she has managed in a single year in her USWNT career.

England enjoyed a positive spell early in the second half before the U.S. won a penalty for a handball by Alex Greenwood, although VAR correctly overturned the call. That incident largely killed the home side’s momentum and they seemed happy to play for the 0-0, perhaps with that 4-3 home loss to Germany in October still on their minds.
Sarina Wiegman’s side will now turn their attention to a friendly with Switzerland on Tuesday, while USA head to the Netherlands.

USA were the stronger side for much of the first half, but Earps had little to do after parrying Alyssa Thompson’s early strike, with England looking far more disciplined in defence than they did last month.
Rose Lavelle and Sam Coffey each posed a threat without managing to find a way through the Lionesses’ rearguard, and Hayes turned to Yazmeen Ryan at halftime with a view to adding some spark to the attack.
It duly paid off. Ryan’s sharp turn and precise through ball on the edge of the box led to Lindsey Horan turning home a shot from Lavelle, although the goalscorer was well offside. Ryan again caused problems eight minutes later, with Leah Williamson making a good interception near the goal line.
England suddenly found a second gear and began to put the U.S. defence under sustained pressure, but that charge dissipated on account of a poor piece of officiating. Ryan’s powerful shot was blocked by Greenwood and the referee awarded a penalty, but a VAR review saw the decision overturned as the ball clearly struck the defender’s body first before brushing her arm.
Ryan and Lavelle continued to threaten, but England were largely comfortable in holding onto the draw. Hayes cut something of a frustrated figure on the touchline, but she was in good spirits as she signed autographs for fans after fulltime of an historic fixture.
“We’re building towards something,” she said to ITV afterwards. “I’m super proud of how we imposed ourselves on them. You can be two things at once. I’m a proud Englishwoman who’s proud to coach America.”

England vs. USWNT live updates, highlights, and commentary
Fulltime
And that’s that! It finishes 0-0 at Wembley. A draw is probably a fair result, although USA created the clearest of what few chances there were. That was a true tactical battle between the world’s top two sides.
90+3 mins: Kelly gets a late booking for catching Krueger late near the touchline. There are only seconds left here. USA’s long free-kick is cleared as far as Kelly, who gets barged over by Krueger as they jump for the ball. No foul for that one.
90 mins: Kelly runs at Krueger, who sticks with her younger opponent all the way and makes the tackle. England take the corner short, but Fran Kirby’s low cross is cleared.
87 mins: Nailbiting for England! Fox makes a good run onto Lavelle’s backheel, but her cut-back finds only Carter, who nudges it back to Earps. Nobody in a red-and-blue jersey gambled on that cross. Meanwhile, Hayes brings on Ally Sentnor for her senior USWNT debut.
84 mins: A loose touch from Bronze allows Ryan to drive into the box, but Earps once again gathers the cross. England’s goalkeeper has been pretty much flawless today, even if she hasn’t been truly stretched.
80 mins: Over 78,000 fans have watched this game inside Wembley Stadium. That’s a world record for a women’s international friendly.
77 mins: Greenwood makes a great covering run to deny Lavelle a clear shot at goal. The game is getting a little bit stretched now, with both sides looking keen for a winner.
72 mins: That penalty incident really killed the momentum England were building. Wiegman and Hayes are each making changes to freshen things up.
66 mins: NO PENALTY! The referee checks the pitchside monitor and overturns the decision. Correct call.
64 mins: PENALTY FOR USA! Greenwood blocks a fierce shot from Ryan and the referee points to the spot straight away for handball. Replays show the ball hit Greenwood’s body and then her arm, so this really should be overturned by VAR…
58 mins: Excellent from Georgia Stanway, who cuts onto her left foot and tries a shot, which is blocked for a corner. England have had a really good few minutes.
56 mins: Better from England as Jess Park leads a good break down the right. Her cross is heading towards Mead at the far post, but Emily Fox clears it well.
53 mins: Straight from the goal kick, USA attack again through Ryan, but Leah Williamson covers well to stop Horan from having a tap-in. Could Ryan have gone for goal there?
52 mins: Horan flashes a low effort across the box and behind for a goal kick. USA are pinning England in their own half right now.
48 mins: GOAL — NO! Offside! Ryan spins superbly into space on the edge of the box and threads a pass through to Lavelle. Her first-time shot, which was drifting wide, is turned into the net by Lindsey Horan, who was well offside. The chance there was probably Lavelle’s, and it was a poor attempt.
Kickoff: Second half
Here we go! One change at the interval, with Yazmeen Ryan on for Emma Sears.
Halftime
Dare we say it’s not living up to its billing? It’s at least been an interesting tactical battle.
45 + 1 mins: Coffey floats over a good free-kick, but the ball is deflected behind for a goal kick. That’s that for the half.
44 mins: Coffey decides to have a go after working some space on the edge of the box, but Earps makes a comfortable save. The stalemate doesn’t look like being broken before halftime.
38 mins: Rose Lavelle plays in a teasing cross, but Jess Carter gets her head to the ball. England’s defence is holding firm so far, with chances at a premium throughout.

28 mins: Lucy Bronze is beginning to get involved in the attacking third now, although it’s leaving England exposed at the back. This time, Thompson is stopped in her tracks by Bronze, but the rebound is fired goalwards by Casey Krueger, forcing a low save from Earps.
21 mins: England beat the press really nicely with Alex Greenwood and Beth Mead down the left wing, but the attack comes to nothing, with Alessia Russo likely offside in the build-up anyway. But the home side are growing into this now.
15 mins: USA have controlled these early exchanges, but Sam Coffey is the first name in the book after stopping an England counter. There’s a sense of these two getting a feel for things so far.
5 mins: Mary Earps makes the first save of the match, getting two hands behind Alyssa Thompson’s shot from 12 yards. Not great defending from England, but Earps made sure they weren’t punished.
Kickoff: First half
The teams take the knee, and we’re off and running.
30 mins before kickoff: Emma Hayes has been greeting plenty of old friends at Wembley, including Mauricio Pochettino, her counterpart at Chelsea for a time.

For the home side, Alex Greenwood, Jessica Naz and Jess Park all start, with potential debutants Laura Blinkilde Brown and Ruby Mace on the bench.

England vs. USWNT kick off time
This friendly match kicks off in London, UK at 5:30 p.m. local time (GMT).
That makes it a 12:20 p.m. ET kickoff, or 10:30 a.m. MT / 9:30 a.m. PT.
England vs. USWNT lineups, team news
Two uncapped players in Wiegman’s squad, Manchester City’s Laura Blinkilde Brown and Leicester City’s Ruby Mace, are in line for their senior international debuts on Saturday if they make it off the bench.
United’s Maya le Tissier will also sit this game out, though, after sustaining concussion in the defeat to Chelsea, with Arsenal’s Lotte Wubben-Moy called up to provide cover.
A host of other stars are sidelined through injury, including Niamh Charles, Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, Lucy Parker and Ella Toone, so this could represent a very difficult test for the Lionesses.
England lineup (4-1-4-1, right to left): Earps (GK) — Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Carter — Walsh — Naz, Park, Stanway, Mead — Russo
England subs: Morgan, Hampton, Kirby, Bright, Turner, Kelly, Clinton, Beever-Jones, George, Moorhouse, Mace, Blindkilde Brown
Hayes has to do without any of the world-class three-pronged front line, as Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson were all left at home.
U.S. Soccer cited “nagging injuries” for the trio, but it appears that it’s nothing more than rest for them after a long season, especially Rodman who missed last the last two international breaks with a back injury and played in the NWSL final the weekend before with her club.
That leaves the forward line extremely thin, as only Lynn Williams (20) and Jaedyn Shaw (eight) have more than one international goal to their name. Shaw starts this one on the bench.
Also missing is Crystal Dunn, who has been absent for club or country for weeks due to personal reasons. Alex Morgan has retired, while both Mia Fishel and Croix Bethune are out with long-term knee injuries.
Goalkeeper Naeher will make her international swan song in this international break.
USA lineup (4-2-3-1 right to left): Naeher (GK) — Fox, Sonnett, Girma, Krueger — Lavelle, Coffey — Thompson, Horan, Williams — Sears
USA subs: Sams, Albert, Nighswonger, Shaw, Sentnor, Yohannes, Davidson, Malonson, Hershfelt, Haught, Gaetino, Ryan
