ESA cancels in-person E3 2022

Cancellation attributed to ongoing health risks presented by COVID-19, no word on whether a virtual event will be held

It will be three straight years without an E3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, as today the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) confirmed to IGN that it has canceled its in-person E3 2022 event.

“Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022,” the ESA told the publication.

“We remain incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

The US trade body didn’t say if there would be a digital event instead this year.

This year’s cancellation came a little earlier than those of 2020 and 2021. The ESA cancelled E3 2020 in March of that year, just as COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. It confirmed it would not have a virtual component either the following month.

The in-person component of E3 2021 was scrapped in February of that year, but the announcement was accompanied by a commitment to run E3 2021 as a virtual event.
