Every Piece Is In Place For Live Action ‘Clone Wars,’ However Unnecessary

Ahsoka

Disney

This week in Ahsoka, Clone Wars fans celebrating the live action culmination of the 7+ season relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka, with her learning her “final lesson” through a series of flashbacks and otherworldly lightsaber fights.

After that episode, and how much it was praised, I do have to wonder if Disney and Dave Filoni may be plotting something after Ahsoka and its companion film are finished. Namely, a live-action remake of at least the highlights of Clone Wars. It may sound dumb, and it certainly is probably unnecessary, but I do believe that all the pieces are in place to make this happen.

First of all, you can say that the series could just stay animated as is, untouched. Sure, but I’m not sure Dave Filoni would even agree that needs to be the case. Ahsoka itself easily could have been animated, Clone Wars style, and yet he leapt at the chance to make it live action. So why not be similarly excited to use all these actors to recreate the best moments of his old series? Again, not necessary, perhaps, but I don’t think he’d be against it, per se.

As for Disney? I mean, have you seen what Disney is doing lately? They are taking dozens of the most beloved animated movies of all time and turning them into live action remakes, for better or worse. This may reflect a lack of originality, and I’m not saying that this is good, just that a live-action remake of animation here is certainly in keeping with their current philosophy elsewhere in the company.

The actors? That seems like the easiest part of this:

Hayden

Bethesda

Hayden Christensen – He seems overjoyed to be back as Anakin both in this show and when he returned in Obi-Wan, praised by fans who seem to understand that his prequel role was held back by his script, not his acting. Christensen, talented as he may be, has not appeared in a non-Star Wars project since 2019. Whether that’s by choice or not, I don’t know, but I have to believe he would be on board for this.

Obi Wan Kenobi

Disney Plus

Ewan McGregor – McGregor has been very vocal about hoping to return for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, but that seems pretty unlikely to happen at this point. But if McGregor wanted to reprise the role all the same, and snatch up some of Kenobi’s best storylines from his animated era, this would be the way to do it.

Ahsoka

Disney

Ariana Greenblatt – That would be the young woman playing Ahsoka in the flashbacks, as it certainly wouldn’t be Rosario Dawson for a Clone Wars series. Greenblatt is about to be a pretty huge star, in the last few years alone playing young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War, having a supporting part in Barbie and she’s about to be Tiny Tina in the upcoming Borderlands movie. I have to believe leading an entire Star Wars series as Ahoska would be an easy sell, busy as she may be.

The Book of Boba Fett

2021 Lucasfilm Ltd.

Temuera Morrison – He’s already back in the Disney Star Wars universe, but I think we can all agree that his Boba Fett was not given the best storylines to work with. Here, Morrison could easily return as Rex (and other clones) for a show like this, and I imagine he’d jump at the chance.

The idea would be that rather than 7 seasons recreating every episode, you’d have maybe 3-4 doing the highlights in eight episode live action seasons.

I can only state so many times that I don’t believe that animated series needs to be remade, but given what Filoni has done with Ahsoka already and how much Disney loves remaking beloved animated hits, I have to believe this is at the very least, on the table for them.
