Iwasoffered2-3scriptsbeforeBhramam.Ididn’tlikeafewofthem,andtheothersdidn’tworkoutthewayIwanted.Ididn’twanttotakeupafilmunlessitsscriptisperfectforme.Thentheyofferedmethisfilm.IsawAndhadhunandlikedit.AndIalsofeltthatthisfilmcouldbemadeinMalayalam.
So,IspoketothedirectorofAndhadhun,SriramRaghavansir,andhealsomentionedthathewaslookingforaMalayalamactorfortheroleinitially.Also,hehadseenlocationsinKochiforthefilm.Thatwaskindofacoincidence.That’showtheprojectfinallyhappened.

WewantedtoremakeAndhadhunmuchbeforeitearnedcultstatus.Butitgotdelayedthenbecauseofthepandemic.Butthedecisionwasmadelongagowhenthefilmwasintheatres.Now,after2-3yearswhenourfilmiscomingoutsoon,Andhadhunbecameacultfilm.
Wewantedtobuythefilm(remakerights)immediatelyafteritsrelease.So,wedidn’thavetheburdeninthatway.WewatchedAndhadhunontheseconddayofitsrelease,anditwasnotevenahitthen.Weknewwearegoingtomakeit,frommuchearlier.So,wewereactuallygrowingwiththatfilm.
3.WasitchallengingtomakearemakefilmthatappealtothesensibilitiesofMalayalamaudiences?
Alotoffilmshavebeenremadeindifferentlanguages.Forexample,Singam-theyremadeitinHindiwiththesametitle.SamewithGhajini,whichwasconsideredacultfilm.Itishappeningallovertheworld.So,I’veneverthoughtaboutthechallengesassociatedwitharemakewhilemakingBhramam.

Tabu’sroleinAndhadhunisverydifficulttoplay.So,whenwethoughtaboutcastingforthatrole,Mamtaseemedtobethebestchoice.AndthenJagadishwasfinalisedtoplaythedoctor,whichisalsoapivotalrole.
Toplaythecopinthefilm,wewantedaveryhandsomeguy(laughs).ForMamta(whoplaysShankar’swife)tohaveanextramaritalaffairinthisstory,wereallyneededtohaveagood-lookingguyinthatrole.Shankarsirlooksverygoodevennow-heisMohanlalsir’scontemporaryandlookssofitforhisage.UnniMukundanwasafantasticchoiceforthisrole-heisarevelation.Also,Ananya,whoplayedUnni’swifeinthefilm,isfantastic.

IhadmyowndoubtsonhowI’mgoingtodealwithPrithviraj,asheisoneofthemostexperiencedactorsoutthereeventhoughheisyoungage-wise.Hehasdoneover100plusfilms.Also,Prithvihasdirectedasuperhitfilm,withbigactorslikeMohanlalandothers.
WhenIdidthisfilmwithhim,Ithoughtheisgoingtotellmethingslike’thissceneisnotworking’ or’itshouldbechoreographedinadifferentway’,orsomethinglikethat.So,Iwasmentallypreparedtotakeallthat.Buthedidn’tsayanything.Heusedtodohisjobandthengoandsitinhisvanordiscusssceneswithhisco-stars.Therewasnotevenabitofinterferencefromhisside.

WhenIdecidedtoshootBhramaminKochi,theysaiditisadone-to-deathplace.Peoplehaveshotmany,manyfilmshere.Still,peopleareshooting.ButIsaid,youknownI’mcomingtothisplaceafterlong20years.So,forme,itismyvisionoflookingatthings.Like,aforeignercomingtoIndiaandshootingtheseplacesaredifferentright?Itwaslikethat.
