The US Senate Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Data Security Subcommittee announced on September 30 (local time) that Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Facebook. We held a public hearing by summoning. The title is “Protecting Children Online: Facebook, Instagram, Mental Health Harm”.
This hearing will be held in response to a series of accusation articles serialized based on Facebook’s internal research material obtained by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The WSJ has accused Facebook of not addressing Instagram’s negative impact on young people, even though it knew it.
Subcommittee Chairman Richard Blumenthal (Connecticut, Democratic Party) said in his opening remarks, “Facebook routinely prioritizes interests over child safety. “I know that Facebook is trying to trick the public and us, using the vulnerability of children as a weapon.”
Davis spoke consistently and calmly, but said he would take many questions back and check. He also reiterated that Facebook has already claimed on its official blog that “Instagram is actively helping teenage women, not exacerbating their problems.”

He also said Facebook’s products were a “lifeline” for young people as schools closed in a pandemic.
Congressmen made some requests, such as not putting a “Like” button on children’s apps, but Davis dismissed all requests. ..
On October 5, the committee held a hearing to summon Facebook whistleblowers, “Protecting Children Online: Testimony from Facebook Whistleblowers.” I plan to open it.
