A model with more working and storage memory costs 649 euros and comes in gray and green. Fairphone will also sell a variant with a green speckled back via its own website.

Fairphone devices are becoming more expensive every year. For example, the suggested retail price of the Fairphone 3 from 2019 was 450 euros, the Fairphone 3 Plus cost 469 euros a year later and the Fairphone 4 starts as said at 579 euros.

Like previous Fairphone smartphones, the

made from sustainably sourced materials as much as possible. Think of Fairtrade gold and tungsten and the aluminum comes from certified companies. In addition, Fairphone pays workers in mines and assembly lines in China an adequate salary, where some other smartphone brands offer lower salaries to keep the cost of their devices as low as possible.

The housing of the Fairphone 4 is designed to be able to repair the smartphone yourself. That is why – as with previous models – the battery is easy to change. Parts such as the screen, loudspeaker and cameras can also be removed and replaced yourself. Fairphone promises to Android Planet to sell these parts for five years through its own website.

Five years of updates for the Fairphone 4

The Fairphone 4 runs out of the box on

Android 11 without significant adjustments. Fairphone promises to keep the smartphone ‘smooth and safe’ for five years, but for the time being communicates a vague update policy.

Wayne Huang, who is primarily responsible for Fairphone’s product development, says in conversation with Android Planet that the Fairphone 4 at least Android 12 and 13 will get. “We also want to roll out updates to Android 14 and 15, but cannot guarantee this yet. Security updates appear every month for the first two years.” How often and how long Fairphone will make security updates available for the Fairphone 4 after that remains unclear.

It is also questionable at what pace Fairphone can roll out those updates. Existing smartphones get updates for five years, but version updates in particular appear much later than with other brands. For example, the Fairphone 3 will not receive an update to Android 11, the version from 2020, until sometime in 2022. Many smartphones from 2020 will be updated to Android 11 within six months. Now that Google has released Android 12, it will become clear how long it will take Fairphone to update it. update available for the Fairphone 4 (and older devices).

Mid Range Specifications

The specifications of the Fairphone 4 are not comparable to similarly expensive smartphones , but with models that are one hundred to two hundred euros cheaper. The manufacturer is forced to opt for this because it prefers to invest in a more sustainable production process, a modular housing and long software support.

To keep the sale price of the Fairphone 4 accessible, Fairphone puts some simpler parts in the smartphone. Below you will find the most important specifications.
