Around the official release of Windows 11, scheduled to occur next Tuesday (05), we find out more information about the new generation of the operating system. One of the biggest controversies of the update is the hardware compatibility, which will not include older processors and will require activation of the TPM module 2.0.
Windows 11 will by default use a security feature from Microsoft called VBS — Virtualization-based Security or “Based Security Virtualization”, in free translation — which creates a secure environment with software and hardware virtualization. However, this measure may affect the performance of games running on the operating system.
O UL Benchmarks, Computer Base and PC Gamer performed several tests with previous versions of Windows 11 and found out that VBS is responsible for decreasing game performance by up to 30%, depending on the distribution in which the titles are run.
The developer platform of 3DMark points out that the feature is on by default on a clean install from Windows 11, but not to update for free Windows 10 mind. This means that the same system can get different benchmark scores, varying depending on the presence of VBS. The PC Gamer, in their analyses, observed a drop of 28% in Shadow of the Tomb Raider (SoTR). The results, however, were inconsistent, as the Computer Base did not experience the same performance drop in this title, but they can be explained due to the differences in the versions used in the tests — Beta and Dev, respectively.

Pre-assembled computers will be the first to face this bug if a fix is not made by Microsoft until the respective releases.
