Portuguese artists who have traveled “some of the most exploratory paths in jazz today” make up the poster for the ‘Autono em Jazz’ festival, which Casa da Música, in Porto, hosts the from the 16th. According to the poster announced this Friday, the ninth edition of this festival will open with a concert by the bassist André Carvalho, at a time when he edits the album “Lost in Translation”, by the North American Outside in Music .
The compositions of “Lost in Translation”, which André Carvalho will show accompanied by guitarist André Matos and saxophonist José Soares, are inspired by untranslatable words from several languages, like Swedish or Tulu.
In the idea of listening to “the most recent creations of musicians who have stood out inside and outside borders”, the ‘Autumn em Jazz’ will host, on the 17th, the meeting on stage between the Portuguese musician João Pais Filipe and the German Burnt Friedman, between percussion and electronics.
On the 19th, it opens and space for LUME, Lisbon Underground Music Ensemble, also with a new album in its portfolio, entitled “Las Californias”.
The collective, created and directed by Marco Barroso, will also have three other dates, in addition to Casa da Música, to present the new album: on the 22nd, in Northern Macedonia, on the 29th, at Jazz ao Centro, in Coimbra, and, on November 14th, in the United Kingdom.
‘Autumn em Jazz’ will also feature the septet Omniae Ensemble, by Pedro Melo Alves, which at Casa da Música will expand to a group of 22 elements, from current improvised, experimental and classical music, directed by conductor Pedro Carneiro.
On October 22, drummer João Lencastre will be playing in a trio with Drew Gress and Leo Genovese , and the closing, the following day, will be with a double performance by the TGB trio, Sérgio Carolino (tuba), Mário Delgado (guitar) and Alexandre Frazão (drums), and with the Brazilian group Banda Zil.
The band that brings together jazz and Brazilian popular music ileira had a short duration and only one album in the 1980s, having been revived recently. According to Casa da Música, the group – which will also perform on October 25th in Lisbon – is preparing to record an album in Portugal.
