Netflix’s plans to enter the video game business are taking shape with the purchase of a development studio.

The video streaming giant Netflix swallows the company Night School Studio, founded in 2014, which is best known for its debut game “Oxenfree”, as the company announced on Tuesday. A purchase price was not mentioned.

Netflix sees video games as a promising area for expansion beyond the core business of video streaming. In the summer, the company hired industry veteran Mike Verdu, who had previously worked for the large game company Electronic Arts, among others, to manage the division.

Own productions as video games

At the same time, Netflix co-boss Ted Sarandos left it open at a conference appearance on Monday when the company’s range of games is to start. The company said it was still at an early stage when it announced the night school purchase.

In the Netflix universe, there are productions such as “Stranger Things”, which are well suited for implementation as video games. Since June, the service has also been trying to get additional revenue through an online shop for fan articles. dpa
