When we PC owners look back, it is easy to think that lately it has only been about postponements, empty store shelves, price increases and a battle over components between “gamers” and “miners”.

But despite this, many have also benefited from the latest AMD or Intel processors, or the latest graphics cards from Nvidia’s RTX 30 series or AMD’s RX 6000 series. All components that did not exist a year ago, but which now delight all those who have managed to get them.

And if you have not succeeded yet, new chances come.

In the months and years to come, the launches of new and more powerful hardware are in line.

If you know when to insert the shock, you may suddenly end up with more powerful hardware than you first thought, so below we have gathered everything we know about new hardware and when it will be launched.

The first cross you can put in your hardware calendar is provided by Intel, and it’s just a few weeks away. The last crossings are close to Christmas next year, but we also get some goodies served in between these.

NOTE: Much of the information in this case is not confirmed by the manufacturers, but based on assumptions and rumors that may turn out not to be true. Therefore, take the information and estimated dates with a pinch of salt.

New Intel processors are here in a few weeks.

Intel’s 12th generation Core i processors, known by the code name « Age Lake “, will be the largest launch from Intel in several generations. Alder Lake will take over for today’s 11th generation “Rocket Lake” processors in October or early November.

Little has been confirmed by Intel yet, but we already know something with reasonable certainty:

For the first time, Intel Processors get two different types of cores: performance cores and efficiency cores. is charged when you perform demanding tasks such as games or rendering, while less demanding tasks – such as background tasks in Windows or movie viewing – will be handled by the efficiency cores.

The efficiency cores use much less power than the performance cores when only they are active. A separate chip on the processor will help the operating system to distribute tasks between the various cores.

The best Alder Lake processors are rumored to have 8 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores.

Each performance core shall have two threads, while the efficiency cores are single-threaded. The top model Core i9–12900K, which is likely to have 8 of each type of core, thus gets 24 threads: 16 threads from the 8 performance cores, and 8 threads from the 8 efficiency cores.

One should take leaks with a pinch of salt, but several sources claim the new processors deliver about 20 percent higher single-core performance than today. In that case, it is a sharp increase that will benefit both creative users and players.

A new production technology for the processors, which Intel seems to want to refer to as “Intel 7”, is in reality a highly optimized production of 10 nanometers formerly known as «10 nm + SuperFin». The technology must be at least as efficient as the 7-nanometer AMD relies on for the production of its rival Ryzen 5000 processors.

Requires new motherboard and cooler The new processors have several power pins and are also oblong rather than square like today’s processors.

They fit accordingly not down to the motherboard with today’s LGA 1200 socket, and gets a new socket called LGA 1700. With it, the compatibility with today’s processor coolers also disappears, so the “cooling industry” probably rejoices over many new sales. When you first need to upgrade your Alder Lake motherboard, you choose one with support for a new generation of memory chips, called DDR5 . Speeds up to 4800 MHz are supposed to be supported out of the box, but with the right chipset, much higher speeds can also be unlocked.

By comparison, today’s Intel processors only support DDR4 memory at 3200 MHz speed out of the box, although it should be said that many manufacturers and PC builders can easily increase this speed.

Apparently Alder Lake will also support today’s DDR4 memory, so the processor can be used with memory you already have or which is a little cheaper to buy than DDR5, which is guaranteed to cost the shirt the first the time. However, DDR4 memory cannot be used on motherboards that support DDR5. So here you will have to choose.

Age Lake also gets support for PCIe 5 Standards . It gives upcoming expansion cards such as SSDs and graphics cards access to a transfer speed to the processor of up to 128 GB / s, up from 64 GB / s for PCIe 4-based devices.

Nvidias RTX 3090 Founders Edition.

We have in fact, just passed the anniversary of the launch of Nvidia’s RTX 30 series. This is without many who wanted an upgrade last autumn, still having succeeded in getting a new graphics card.

Extreme demand and difficult situation in terms of access to components, however, does not stop Nvidia from thinking ahead. And before they take the next quantum leap with the RTX 40 series, they will in all probability serve us a so-called Super series.

This is probably slightly refurbished RTX 30 cards, with a few more CUDA processors, slightly more memory for selected models (RTX 3080 Super is rumored to have 12 GB of G6X memory, up from 10 GB) and a slight adjustment of clock frequencies.

Super- the cards will probably replace the current RTX 30 series to avoid ending up in direct competition with them, and we can hardly expect better access to cards or lower prices when they are launched.

What we what we can expect, however, is that Nvidia’s push towards “mines” will continue, so that all Supercards will be so-called LHR models. These contain barriers that make them less effective when digging for cryptocurrencies, which is absolutely necessary for any of the cards to find their way to gamers.

A 3D render of Intel’s upcoming Alchemist graphics chip.

Intel.

En 3D-render av Intels kommende Alchemist-grafikkbrikke. Earlier this year confirmed Intel that they will start making dedicated graphics cards for desktops and laptops. With that, they challenge the duopoly Nvidia and AMD have had for over two decades.

For a long time it was uncertain how serious Intel was about the investment, but after spending the last few years stealing talent from both Nvidia and AMD, we see signs that the giant is serious. Intel has also been refurbishing its drivers and software recently.

It is expected that the top model in the first generation of graphics cards from Intel, which goes by the code name «Alchemist», will deliver performance on a par with Nvidia’s RTX 3070 graphics card or AMD’s RX 6700 XT, and have up to 16 GB G6 memory. Nvidias RTX 3090 Founders Edition. It should mean good image flow in 1440p resolution in newer games. Baksiden av en Intel-prosessor. Already for the Alchemist series, Intel should have ready an AI technology that can challenge Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling. Furthermore, their graphics cards will support beam tracking and other new technologies already available to Nvidia and AMD owners, such as “Variable Rate Shading”.

Intel will be in talks with third-party manufacturers, so expect players like MSI, Asus and Gigabyte to offer Alchemist-based graphics cards next year.

Performance on par with the RTX 3070 is hardly enough to make enthusiasts drool, especially as the launch is still several months away. However, it is in this price and performance segment that most graphics cards are sold, and if Intel gets a foothold there, it may be up to later generations to take up the fight against rivals’ boss cards.

A new player is in any case welcome in the market. Not just because it could put pressure on today’s duopoly, but because Intel wants to bring increased production capacity to a market in crisis. With the current delivery situation, many will be inclined to try cards from a new player even if it is not leading on performance. It will keep it available at an ok price.

After the first Alchemist series, Intel has said that subsequent series will be called Battlemage, Celestial and Druid, respectively. In other words, the investment goes over several years, so this will be exciting.

Intel with new graphics card – can become a competitor to Nvidia and AMD

An AMD Ryzen processor.

En AMD Ryzen-prosessor.

The Ryzen 5000 series from AMD was so good that many opted out of Intel’s Core i processors and platform when buying a new PC in the last year.

AM Now preparing the next generation that can bring between 20 to 30 percent higher performance and DDR5 support.

Before this launch, it is also important to have your tongue straight in your mouth. For the first time since the first Ryzen processors were launched early in 2017, AMD is switching to a new processor socket. From AM4, to AM5.

This means that no one will have the option to slip one of the new processors into their existing motherboard. However, today’s processor coolers for the AM4 socket can probably be used with the AM5 socket.

While it can be frustrating to have to change motherboards to get higher processor performance, there are several reasons why AMD has landed on this solution.

First, the aging AM4 socket began to give their processors several artificial speed limitations and supported technologies that competitor Intel does not notice as they replace their LGA socket far more often.

Secondly, the time will have come to phase out DDR4 memory for faster and more energy-efficient DDR5 memory by next autumn, something AMD is fulfilling here.

The new processors are expected to form the Ryzen 7000 family (where the Ryzen 6000 family that comes first may be reserved for so-called APUs with integrated graphics).

The Ryzen 7000 processors will be the first to be based on AMD’s new Zen 4 architecture and will benefit from increased energy efficiency due to the transition to a 5-nanometer production process. Today’s Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000 processors are manufactured with a 7-nanometer process.

The processors are expected to offer up to 16 cores. The chipset that comes with the processors should also support the USB 4 standard for faster connections. Unlike Intel’s competitors, however, these Ryzen processors do not appear to support the PCIe 5 standard.

En AMD Ryzen-prosessor.

AMDs RX 6900 XT.

AMDs RX 6900 XT.

With today’s RX 6000 series, AMD took a strong lead in the management Nvidia has had on graphics performance in recent years. However, they are still not fully competitive in the enthusiast segment, and have significantly weaker beam tracking performance.

During the last half of 2022, AMD plans to remedy this by releasing the RX 7000 series. This will be based on a new architecture, called RDNA3, which enables the graphics cards to deliver higher performance. The transition to a new production process of either 5 or 6 nanometers (down from the current 7 nanometer process) will also make the cards far more energy efficient.

Little other concrete information is known, but according to rumors that have found their way online, AMD is working to increase performance by over 40 percent and the efficiency with up to 50 percent per watt. AMD also get to expand and focus further on its so-called Infinity Cache rather than giving the cards a large and fast memory bus as the competitor. In today’s generation of graphics cards, this makes AMD’s cards slightly weaker when playing in very high resolution, but on the other hand makes them less attractive for mining mining where memory speed is important.

AMD’s new drivers unlock higher performance and better autoclocking

One of today’s RTX 30 series graphics cards.

Anders Brattensborg Smedsrud, Tek.no

After the Super Series served us slightly improved RTX 30 cards early in the year, it is expected that Nvidia will introduce us to their next real quantum leap towards the end of 2022.

The new graphics family will presumably be called the RTX 40 series, and will be based on the “Ada Lovelace” architecture.

When Ada Lovelace-based RTX 40 cards replace today’s Ampere-based RTX 30 and RTX 30 Super-k ort, there is reportedly one thing that is at the top of Nvidia’s list:

Increased performance.

Some well-known goodies, such as “kopite7kimi” if previously hit the mark before launches from Nvidia, claim that the performance of the new series can almost be doubled compared to today’s best RTX 30 cards. We take this with a grain of salt, as the average of performance improvements between architectures from Nvidia has been closer to 60 percent in recent generations.

In addition to improvements in architecture, they will achieve higher performance by producing the cards on a new 5-nanometer process from TSMC, greatly increasing the number of graphics processors and using faster G6X memory at a speed of 24 Gbps, which is over 20 percent up from the current 19.5 Gbps. It is also likely that we will see improvements in radiation tracking performance and perhaps a new version of DLSS that is more efficient or more accurate than today.

Raptor Lake, ie Intel’s 13th generation Core series, can take over the baton from Alder Lake already towards the end of next year. Then to compete directly with AMD’s Zen 4-based Ryzen processors which are expected in about the same period. Or a little earlier.

Among the news, it is rumored that the processors’ performance cores are upgraded with increased efficiency and performance, while the efficiency cores remain the same, but increase in number.

The top model, which can be named Core i9–13900K if current naming conventions are adhered to, can have a total of 24 cores of which 8 are improved performance cores and 16 is a doubling of efficiency cores.

The Raptor Lake processors will likely support higher DDR5 speeds of 5600 MHz out of the box. The Alder Lake processors, by comparison, support 4800 MHz as standard. get a BIOS update from the manufacturer.
