Brisbane remain the frontrunners to secure the signature of Payne Haas despite the powerhouse prop opting to test his value on the open market.
Haas is contracted to the Broncos until the end of 2024, but is free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1. His agent, Ahmad Merhi, confirmed all offers will be considered to determine his client’s worth.
Considered one of the best front-rowers of his generation, the NSW forward could command a seven-figure salary if he chose to leave Red Hill. As recently as March, an opportunity was presented for Haas to try to crack the NFL, although it’s not a path he is currently interested in pursuing. However, rugby could be an option, with this masthead revealing last year that European clubs were already circling the Origin forward.
“Our concentration this year is not to disrupt the Brisbane Broncos whatsoever,” Merhi said.
“We want the Broncos to be successful and we don’t want to put a bump in that road. At the moment he is paid to represent that team and he wears that emblem on his jersey with pride.
“To everyone who has reached out to us, we’ve been very clear in our statements that we won’t have any discussions until November 1.”
The Broncos have tabled an extension offer that would make Haas the highest-paid forward in the club’s history, but the 23-year-old has opted not to take it up. Only last year, Haas requested a release from his contract, which Brisbane officials rejected.
While Haas could name his price, one of the biggest motivations in any decision will be playing for a winning club. Haas has previously sought performance clauses that would allow him to leave Brisbane if the team didn’t hit certain targets, which the club rejected.
While he has won the Broncos’ player of the year award four times in a row, he is frustrated he has hardly played any finals football during his career. However, there is a chance to rectify that given Kevin Walters’ side is behind only Penrith on the ladder on for-and-against.
The Haas revelation came on a busy day in the player market. Shaun Johnson will finish his career with the Warriors after signing a one-year contract extension.
Johnson has arguably found career-best form playing under coach Andrew Webster this season and has opted to stay put. The 32-year-old had considered retiring at the end of this season, but a resurgence has prompted him to play on.
Wests Tigers had expressed an interest in poaching the Kiwi international, but he never seriously contemplated finishing up anywhere else.
Manly’s spending spree has continued after the club re-signed Taniela Paseka for a further two seasons.
Paseka recommitted to the club for 2025 and 2026, despite interest from several rival clubs. The former Tigers prop has averaged 146 metres this year and boasts a tackle efficiency of 93 per cent.
The Dolphins have tabled a four-year deal for two Sea Eagles allowed to explore their options, promising siblings Latu and Samuela Fainu. The Sea Eagles won’t be able to retain the brothers after a spending spree that includes the signings of Luke Brooks, Tommy Talau, Matt Lodge and the re-signing of Josh Schuster.
The Wests Tigers are also keen on the brothers, putting incoming coach Benji Marshall on a collision course with his long-time mentor Wayne Bennett.
Bennett has already met with the brothers and the Dolphins have now put a lucrative offer on the table. Junior Blues stars Latu, a five-eighth, and Samuela, a forward, were chosen for Thursday night’s under-19s State of Origin clash.

Meanwhile, Josh Addo-Carr has been ruled out of Canterbury’s clash with Brisbane after suffering a hamstring injury in State of Origin III.
“The Fox” limped off Accor Stadium with three minutes remaining in NSW’s 24-10 victorya move which allowed utility Clint Gutherson to briefly take the field. Addo-Carr scored one of the greatest tries in Origin history with a spectacular chip and chase.
