At the same time as soldiers are deployed to fill up the petrol stations, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warns that the lack of fuel and goods at the grocery stores can last until Christmas.

Early Monday morning, a group of soldiers showed up at the Bouncefield oil depot in Hemel Hampstead just north of London. They have been training hard for the last week. Not to learn how to use weapons, or how to survive in the field.

Britain is not involved in a new armed conflict.

Recently, the country has been characterized by a fuel crisis . More precisely, a driver crisis created by, among other things, Brexit, which more and more Britons believe is going really badly , and the corona pandemic. There have not been enough heavy transport drivers to drive petrol to the stations. Across the country, there have been long queues.

Put this? thing must know about the food and petrol crisis

200 soldiers

Now things are starting to improve in many places, but they are still struggling, especially in London and the south-east of England. According to Sky News 1 out of 5 stations were out of fuel on Sunday in these areas. 3 out of 5 stations had both diesel and petrol.

It is mainly in these areas that the around 200 soldiers who have been deployed today will operate. Half of them are drivers. The rest helps to fill up the tankers.

– The inventory in London and the South of England has taken a little longer to return to normal than other parts of Britain, therefore we are now using military personnel to speed up deliveries in these areas, says a spokesman for the authorities.

Comment: This is a crisis

Can take months

But even though it now seems to be heading towards a preliminary improvement of the situation which has plagued Britain lately, the chaos is not over yet. The shortage of heavy transport drivers is not over. It is estimated that there are 100,000 fewer than what is strictly needed.

It affects a number of industries . Among other things, the supermarkets, which in many places have struggled with deliveries.

This weekend, Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted, according to The Times , that problem can last for several months, and thus affect the British Christmas celebration.

He still believes that the business community must take its share of responsibility:

– The authorities cannot go in and fix all the links in the supply chain.

A key part of the problem is that many of those who have previously driven heavy transport in the UK have left the country as as a result of Brexit. For Johnson and co, the withdrawal from the EU was important to gain control over immigration in the country. Now, however, they have had to issue thousands of temporary visas to bring in extra drivers.

The Prime Minister does not rule out that they may be forced to release even more, but opposite BBC he warns against believing that the solution lies in letting in a large number of foreign workers. Instead, he described the situation as “a period of adjustment” for the British economy.

“What the hell is this?” The shortage of foreign labor does not only affect the heavy transport industry. Several other industries are also struggling. Everything from toy stores to electronics chains and not least agriculture.

A number of turkey farmers have had to scale down production because there are not enough people to maintain the normal level. And where we Norwegians mash ourselves with ribs and chops on Christmas Eve, it is turkey that prevails on the other side of the North Sea.

– Many people will ask “what the hell is this?” when they get the Christmas dinner served. It will not be traditional, retail analyst Clive Black said in an interview with The Times

last week.
