Limited series based on true—and screwy—events are all the rage on TV in 2022. We’ve got Inventing Anna, telling the story of the infamous scammer Anna Delvey. We’ve also got The Dropout, telling the story of Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes, Super Pumped depicting Uber and Travis Kalanick, and WeCrashed, diving into the story behind WeWork and Adam Neumann. Compared to all of these, Hulu’s Pam & Tommy is almost telling the story of an ancient fable (it’s set in the mid-90s)—but it’s also maybe the most salacious of all.
Which is why it takes a particular bit of nuance and tact for Pam & Tommy to tell its story. Based on a 2014 Rolling Stone piece, the series dives into the key characters you’d expect: of course there’s actress/model Pamela Anderson (Lily James) and rocker Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan), but the story’s other central figure is Rand Gauthier, the disgruntled worker who when fired by Lee stole the tape and led to its eventual release. Also improbably featured in the story? Tommy Lee’s penis, voiced by actor Jason Mantzoukas. But we’ll let you cross that bridge when you get there.
Each episode in Pam & Tommy‘s eight-episode run reveals a different piece of the painting; after one episode you may feel like you really know Gauthier (as played by Seth Rogen), while another episode may have you seeing a bit more of Anderson and Lee, and so on and so forth. Director Craig Gillespie, who did a good job with similar subject matter in the movie I, Tonya, does a good job of managing the absurd real-life story and reigning in larger-than-life characters in a way that makes them feel real.
