Horrified TikToker loses her brows to lamination – but here’s how you can avoid it happening

There’s no such thing as a completely foolproof beauty trend, as Selena Gomez proved with her brow lamination mishap earlier this year.

Now it seems the internet-loved trend has claimed another victim, after one TikToker shared her disasterous experience with the lamination process that left her with no eyebrows at all.

Beauty fanatic Azalea Williams, from Dallas Texas, shared the horrifying story on her account, captioning it: “Whatever you do patch test before you tint your brows”. Sound advice, as Azalea found out in the worst possible way what happens when you have an allergic reaction to her eyebrow tint.

In her video, the beauty fan showed herself pre-lamination, revealing a gorgeous pair of dark, fluffy brows. However, her video took a turn as she showed herself after the laminating process, with her eyebrows completely gone and peeling, flaky skin surrounding the place where they used to be.

When asked by one follower what happened, Azalea replied: “I had to shave my brows off, the allergic reaction was from the tint and if I would have left the dyed hair on my face it would have gotten worse.”

Allergic reactions like Azalea’s are why all beauty salons in the UK require you to do a patch test on your skin at least 24 hours before you get any sort of beauty procedure done, particularly as brow lamination contains harsh chemicals that help relax your brow hair.

If you’ve sacrificed your brows in a beauty mishap, you’re in good company, as Kylie Jenner previously revealed her eyebrows ‘fell off’’ after a bleaching disaster left her with thin, sparse hair.

If you’ve got a bit of fear when it comes to brow treatments now, don’t worry. There are plenty of things you can do to avoid having similar incidents happen to you, so you don’t have to risk sacrificing your brows in the name of beauty.

Firstly, prepare your skin accordingly. One to two weeks before your lamination appointment, you should avoid using any retinols, exfoliants or AHA/BHA-based products, as they can aggravate and irritate your skin, leaving it tender and more prone to a reaction.

You should also avoid tweezing, waxing or threading your eyebrows beforehand, ideally leaving them for around four weeks before your appointment. Not only does this give you thicker, fuller hair to work with, but it also prevents your pores and follicles from being open and easily irritated.

Between appointments, it’s also essential to look after your brows to keep them healthy and nourished, particularly after an intensive treatment like lamination.

Keep them clean and cleansed just like you would with your hair, and regularly brush through them with a spoolie to help remove loose hairs, dirt and oil build up.

You can also add a brow serum to your beauty routine, which helps infuse them with extra nourishing ingredients designed specifically to create healthy eyebrows.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Lash and Brow Serum, £12.40 here, is ideal for helping encourage hair growth and keep your brows healthy and nourished. Plus, it can be used on your lashes too, making it a multi-talented beauty bag essential.

To add extra moisture and protection to your brows, Makeup Revolution’s Rehab Brow Care Serum, £9.99 here, is a reparative formula that helps to strengthen your brow hairs, particularly after treatments such as waxing, tinting and lamination.

Finally, always make sure you’re visiting a reputable salon that insists on a patch test beforehand for new customers. Now, ditch the worry and go forth with fabulous brows.
