«How many times have Jorge Jesus and Paulo Sousa won the Champions League?»

Brazilian coach Celso Roth questioned this Thursday the criteria for choosing the managers of clubs in his country when hiring coaches, even pointing to the Portuguese Jorge Jesus and Paulo Sousa , despite having left some praise for the coach who recently left Benfica.

Jorge Jesus passed through Flamengo before returning to Benfica, leaving a mark with the conquest of the Libertadores, the Recopa Sudamericana, the Brasileirão, the Brazilian Supercup and also the Guanabara Cup and the Carioca Championship. Now, Paulo Sousa will assume the technical command, after the departure of Renato Gaúcho.

«We want quality. With the exception of Jesus and Abel, questioned before Libertadores – he won because he made a retroactive scheme – we have to analyze. Jorge Jesus did a wonderful job, but before coming to Brazil and even now, he was always questioned in Portugal. He was fortunate – and there are those moments in his career – to arrive at the right time, with a good team, with technical quality, without taking credit for the coach, much less Jorge Jesus”, he said, in statements on the Brazilian program Central do Market.

Then, the 64-year-old coach, who has not been active since 2016, spoke about the managers’ options.

«We have to be very careful. Whoever makes the choices has to be careful. We are now in this situation: the manager now thinks that the Brazilian coach no longer has the quality to work in his teams. And go look for who won what? Jorge Jesus won the European Cup how many times? How many times has Paulo Sousa won the European Cup? If it’s to bring people, it’s to bring people who qualify our football. What did we improve on? Flamengo improved in what with Jorge Jesus, if not the technical quality of a team of great technical quality? I am speaking in general terms and it is not against anyone», he said.

If it is true that Paulo Sousa never won the Champions League as a coach, he has already won – and twice – as a player. In 1996, at the service of Juventus. In 1997, with Borussia Dortmund.
