If You’re Waiting to Stream Scream Here’s What to Know

When the first Scream debuted back in 1996, it faced an almost insurmountable pressure to succeed, amidst a sea of cliche slashers in what was an—at the time—often-maligned horror subgenre. Following the success of multiple franchises in the 70’s and 80’s including Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween, sequels and knockoffs had made it so that slashers were considered a declining art. Enter director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson’s comical, subversive take on a genre awash with stale sequels, desperate to reclaim the glory of the previous decade. Enter: Scream.

Starring a strong cast including Neve Campbell, Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, and Drew Barrymore, the film centers on Sidney Prescott (Campbell), a teen tormented by a killer wearing a now iconic black cape and Ghostface mask. The first film earned over $200 million at the box office (adjusting for inflation), according to Forbes. It’s sequel, Scream 2, didn’t do too bad either, grossing around $100 million according to Box Office Mojo and garnering a similar amount of praise, if not more, as the original.

And since the first film’s release, there’s been not just one, but four sequels. Campbell, David Arquette, and Courtney Cox star as the franchise’s mainstay cast, coming back again and again to be terrorized by a masked killer. The newest installment, simply titled Scream, brings those three back, along with a number of new cast members including Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, and Jenna Ortega. In this newest installation, Campbell reprises her role as Prescott, determined more than ever before to kill Ghostface and keep the killer from terrorizing more helpless teenagers. It’s the first Scream sequel not helmed by horror pioneer Craven (who died back in 2015), and with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score, it looks like his legacy is properly kept alive in this newest addition to the franchise.

When Will Scream (2022) be available to stream?

During the pandemic, streaming services realized audiences appreciated a short window between a theater release and streaming availability. Considering how quickly films like Marvel’s Eternals hit Disney+, we can expect Scream to head to Paramount+ relatively soon after its 45-day exclusive theatrical run. Scream could be available to stream around March, although no official date is confirmed yet.
