While the cases of child abuse are increasing day by day in Turkey, Diyarbakır has recently become one of the centers where the number of child abuse has increased. .
According to the data of Diyarbakir Bar Association, 50 children applied for legal aid within a year and a half. According to experts, the reason for the high rates of abuse is that society hides the truth and children feel guilty.

What is the reason for this? How did such a figure come out in one month? How should families protect their children? What kind of an impact can society have on these events?
We talked to experts about child abuse and how children can be protected from abuse.
Psychologist Ferhat Demir‘ According to this, families can realize that their children are abused in two ways. One of them is spiritual and the other is physical:
“If your child is introverted, does not talk to anyone, is afraid and has bruises on his body and reacts when you try to touch them, you should definitely pay attention here. We need to know that if he is an active child at school and suddenly becomes quiet and does not talk to his friends, it is a traumatic experience and can lead to suicide.” “The child feels guilty”
Expressing that families should provide sexual education to their children in order to prevent abuse, Demir said:
“Basically, it is very important to inform the child. While doing this, using a language appropriate for the age and development of the child, to say that the child has special parts of his body, that no one can touch his body without his consent, and not to abuse the child too much while conveying this.
“The child should know that his body is a special concept and he should be more careful in games over the body.”
“We should make you feel that you are not alone”
Expressing that it is necessary to create a space of trust in order to be able to express himself, Demir continued:
“Child who have been abused generally feel guilty about this incident and experience great fear. They think that society will blame them. These traumatized children first lose their sense of trust. In the first place, it is necessary to create a safe space for the child.
“While doing this, he said: it is necessary to instill confidence and enable them to express themselves. Because most of the time, children feel lonely and helpless. Children who are confronted with this event that they are not alone experience a trauma within themselves and it is difficult for them to explain and put it into words.
“For this reason, we are aware of many abuse cases after years. Because kids can’t tell. Or we can’t put in place mechanisms that will allow them to tell.
“On the other hand, they expect parents and teachers to notice them. The family or teacher should give confidence to the child so that the child can tell what he or she has been through. With abuse Families who encounter this are usually very angry and unfortunately they make the child feel this too. When the child realizes this, he becomes more withdrawn.” A social worker for each neighborhood

According to , on the other hand, in order to prevent abuse, the society must first be made conscious and informed about it.
“Education should start with families first. In our society, the concept of family is not introduced. is tight. If there has been a case of abuse within the family, it is immediately covered and closed. The child is left alone and cannot find a place to be heard. I think that these cases will decrease as families become more conscious.
“The locals and administrations have great responsibilities here. Just as there is a Family Health Center in every neighborhood, there is also a social service specialist in every neighborhood. That person should take care of all the people in the neighborhood, make detailed researches, and inform the families. Even if it is, it is not sufficient. It is necessary to strengthen the laws and increase the application channels. Awareness raising activities should be carried out for those working in the police and hospitals. What we need to do is to provide these opportunities.”
Speaking about the increase in abuse cases, Yalçın stated that such incidents take place in many societies, but the most cases are in closed societies, “Actually, the cases did not increase. It was already too much, it just became visible. I think the data of 23 children were abused, shared by bianet in October 2021, is only 20 percent. There are many cases that are not reflected in official records. This is because families choose not to believe their children when faced with such situations. or they cover it up.” Abuse increased in the pandemic
A lawyer working on children’s rights from Diyarbakır Bar Association Huriye Hamdi reminded that bianet abused 23 children in Diyarbakır in October 2021, “There were many cases of abuse in the past, but it was not heard much because judicial authorities were not applied. Now that there are applications, we are aware of such a problem.”
“We, as the bar association, are currently following up on 60 files. A few of these are other crimes. Most of them are sexual abuse. In the last 1.5 years, 50 children have applied to our bar due to abuse.
“Children were most exposed to abuse during the pandemic period. Children were imprisoned and trapped in homes without a plan and program. They could not find their teachers, friends, or judicial authorities to make their voices heard. With the opening of the data began to reach our hands. We consider these data as a result of the pandemic and confining children at home.”
“They could not find any medium where they could make their voices heard. ”
Lawyer Hamdi, reminding the data of 150 thousand 615 children who came as victims of crime to the security unit of TÜİK in 2021 in 2020, He continued as follows:
“55.3% of them are victims of injury, 14.5% of them are crimes against family order, 12.2% of them are victims of sexual crimes. In the data opened by this official institution, there is no change or decrease in crimes involving children, but there was a 41 percent decrease in injury and sexual crimes, which shows us that children can reach or voice their voice in 2020, that is, during the pandemic process.
“Victim families and children, Diyarbakır Bar Association He was with them until the end when he applied to the Child Rights Center he should know about us. The Bar Association provides these children with the necessary legal support until the end. They just need to apply to us.
“On the other hand, children and families can easily apply to the child rights center of bar associations in other cities or, if there is no such center, directly to bar associations. If they cannot reach them, too. They can call 155 police helpline, 156 gendarmerie, 183 Family Social Support Line and request help.”
NOTE: According to TUIK’s 2016 data, the number of cases related to child abuse in Turkey has increased approximately 3 times in the last 10 years and is 250 Thousands of children were abused. According to the 2018 report of the Human Rights Association, Turkey ranks 3rd in the world for child abuse. On the other hand, according to the data of The Economist magazine, Turkey ranks 60th out of 60 countries in terms of child safety.
