The rapid spread of the Omicron variant is bringing daily infections in Italy to figures never seen so far. Also due to the boom in tampons which reached one million, after the physiological decline of Christmas. The 78,313 new positives of December 28th are a “monster” number never seen before in a single day. And the number is destined to rise further: for mid-January the forecast is one hundred thousand infected. A figure that could also return a partial photograph of the real situation, in light of the fact that the tracking system has been skipped in several territories.
But so far, looking only at the numbers, in hospitals the situation is better than last year: hospitalizations have halved and in general the health system seems to respond well to the pressure caused by the increase in calls to 118. With a number of positives currently in Italy not much higher than a year ago (598,856 registered on December 28, 2021 compared to 575,221 on the same day in 2020) the hospitalizations are less than half in the ordinary wards: 10,089 compared to 23,932 (- 58%). As well as in intensive care: 1,145 compared to 2,565 (- 55%).
Let’s start from Lombardy , the epicenter of the contagion with a record incidence of 951 new weekly cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and the record peak in the province of Milan (1,243). On 28 December alone, 28,795 new cases were registered in the region. And the currently positives are 150,191. If we look at the same day a year ago, there were only 573 new cases compared to a total of 54,765 people who tested positive at that day. Yet, despite the fact that the positives are three times as many today as a year ago, hospital admissions are less than half in the ordinary wards (1,698 compared to 3,791 on the same day a year ago) and almost a third in intensive care (193 compared to 512 December 28, 2020).
The trend is similar in the other two regions of northern Italy with the highest incidence at the moment: Piedmont (696 new weekly cases per 100 thousand inhabitants) and Veneto (663). In Piedmont on 28 December 7,933 new infected were registered , for a total of 47,896 currently positive. A year ago there were 303 new cases and the total of positives amounted to 30,303. Situation reversed on the hospitalization front: 1,118 in the wards ordered today and 3,042 (almost triple) a year ago; 92 in intensive compared to 205. “Compared to a year ago – remembers the strategic consultant Covid of the Piedmont Region Pietro Presti – the ability of the system to perform swabs has also grown enormously: there were just over 5,400 on this day of a year ago and today there were over 71,500, with the laboratories to process them passed from the 2 existing at the beginning of the pandemic in Piedmont to 45 now “.
In Veneto , one of the epicenters of the contagion on the occasion of the first wave, the currently positive ones on 28 December 2021 recorded a decrease of 16% compared to a year ago (75,971 compared to 90,942). But the decline in hospitalizations is much more pronounced: 1,050 in ordinary wards today and 2,696 a year ago (-61%). And 165 in intensive care compared to 355 (-53%)
