At the age of twenty-five, Yassin Mohamed traveled a lot. The left side trained at the Racing Club de Lens has for example had experiences in Belgium or Andorra. After a short Italian parenthesis near Vicenza where he was able to rub shoulders with a certain Djibril Cissé, the native of Arras has found a certain stability in Spain. Today, he plays for the Los Barrios club in the fourth division. Interview.

A childhood linked to football

I was born on April 4, 1996 in Arras. I was rocked by football from an early age because my father played in the third division with Arras when he was younger. Subsequently, he became a trainer. I was with him all the time so I was able to immerse myself in his experience. I started in the Anzin club, near my home before arriving in Arras. I remember that I won an important tournament against Lens with Arras. Beating the Racing Club de Lens with the club from my city was something very strong.

A triple essential culture

My origins are very important to me. My family comes from Melilla, a Spanish city located in Morocco. This mixture brings me a lot. After that, I was born in France and it is here that I did all my classes before going abroad at the age of seventeen. I therefore attach as much importance to my three cultures.

RC Lens

I had a lot of choices. I didn’t mean to be wrong. I could have joined LOSC, Valenciennes or even Amiens after Arras. But when the Racing Club de Lens presented themselves, I didn’t hesitate. It is the benchmark club in the north of France. Everything is incredible: the facilities, the stadium, the players who came by … Joining this club was something great. The Gaillette training center is incredible. It is possible to combine studies and football in the best possible conditions. School support is very rigorous. In Lens, you have everything to succeed. You don’t miss anything. The trainers I was able to meet were all former professionals like Eric Sikora and Hervé Arsène who were champions of France with the club in 1998. The emphasis is on the human aspect, and the players come out necessarily grown. I had several good seasons with Lens. Everything went very well, both athletically and academically. My departure happened naturally because I could not come to an agreement with the club. I was then approached by several foreign clubs.

Discovery of Belgium with Mouscron then Zulte Waregem

Belgian football is very competitive. The game is more direct and more physical than in France. A little English. The championship is very well attended. Lots of recruiters come to watch the games. It is a football in perpetual evolution. I know that there are more and more professional contracts in Nationale 1 (third Belgian division, editor’s note) than before, for example. We have been able to discover many Belgian clubs in the Champions League or the Europa League in recent years. I remember La Gantoise in particular, which won against Olympique Lyonnais. The Belgian championship is still undercut but it is starting to gain more respect at European level.

Spain with C órdoba

The results were not there, either for the first team in La Liga or for the reserve team in the third division. Both teams are down! Afterwards, on an individual level, I played my matches. Several clubs were interested. I trusted my agent because he allowed me to sign in Córdoba. I directed all the clubs that wanted me to him. I wanted to stay in Spain. He only offered me projects that did not interest me. An agent is a bit like the lottery: you can come across good agents but also incompetent agents. There is sometimes a distrust of the player vis-à-vis the agent. The reports are therefore not always obvious.

“On the return, after the victory, it was another Djibril”

Return to Belgium and Andorran adventure

After Córdoba, I went to Tournai in Belgium. It went rather well but I had the opportunity to play in the first division in the Andorran championship with Penya Encarnada. There was the former OM defender Abdoulaye Meïté and the former Monaco stopper Massamba Sambou in the championship. At the beginning, I was very curious to discover this new football. I was quickly surprised at the level. It was competitive. I think in the end, I learned a lot from this experience from a personal point of view.

Truncated adventure in Italy

After Andorra, I joined Vicenza in Italy. This experience was a huge disappointment for me. I had a little trouble getting over it in the sense that I was really happy to have signed there. Especially since my test went really well. I had even scored in a friendly match! In the process, I signed my contract. And many French players have arrived: Djibril Cissé, but also Mathieu Manset, Quentin Pereira, Alassane També or Clément Maury. I was twenty-two, and I think with this experience in Serie C, I could have exploded. In the end, an imbroglio put an end to the project rather quickly. In my opinion, some people were not competent. I was very annoyed in the sense that I wasted time and money.

Train and play with Djibril Cissé

So I had the chance to meet Djibril Cissé. He is a very respectful person. I remember a friendly match in Slovenia. On the bus, he was very calm. When the warm-up started, he made it clear to us that we hadn’t been on the road for nothing. Even for a preparation match, he was able to instill the culture of winning within the team. On the way back, after the victory, it was another Djibril. Much more expressive. I liked it a lot: very professional before the match, much more human after.

“Leaving N2 and arriving in Ligue 2, that would be great”

Stability in Spain

I then joined La Tercera (Spanish fourth division, editor’s note) in Almagro. I knew the coach well since my adventure in Córdoba. The club were struggling but ultimately held on. I then did two seasons at Lorca, a club which was still in the second division not long ago. The infrastructures are magnificent. I had the honor of wearing the captain’s armband. I had a great time in Lorca. This summer, I joined the Los Barrios club. Personally, I am satisfied with my first part of the season. In particular, I was able to face Recreativo de Huelva or Xérès, two teams that were in La Liga a few years ago. There is also the third Sevilla FC team in our league. For now, the club’s objective is to maintain it.

Its ambitions

I have a rather unusual course. I am very happy with what I was able to do. But I would very much like to find a project with real human values. I want to climb the ladder with the same club. For example, to start from N2 and arrive in Ligue 2, that would be great. This is typically the kind of challenge I would like to experience during my career. Afterwards, if I can sign for Real Madrid, which is my dream club, I won’t say no (laughs)!

His profile

I am very cerebral in the sense that I think a lot on a soccer field. I play with my head a lot. I think anticipation is my main strength. Regarding the technical aspect, I am a pure left-hander so I have a good left paw (laughs). I am quite versatile: I can easily play in central defense, even if I remain above all left side. I attach a lot of importance to the state of mind, to the collective. I try to always be positive. Being there for your teammates is essential. I was very inspired by Maxwell, Filipe Luís or Benoît Trémoulinas. I like Juan Bernat too. It is important to have examples.

Eleven of legend

I will only choose players from my time. I’ll put Iker Casillas in goal, with Sergio Ramos and Thiago Silva in central defense. Daniel Alves and Marcelo on the sides. It’s in the middle that it gets complicated (laughs)! Even if I am for Real, I will opt for an Iniesta-Xavi duo. In number ten, Zidane! With Messi on the right and Cristiano Ronaldo on the left. And in peak, R9!

To summarize

After a short Italian parenthesis near Vicenza where he was able to rub shoulders with a certain Djibril Cissé, the native of Arras has found a certain stability in Spain.
