Inventor's Day: why is it celebrated on September 29 in Argentina?

Throughout his life other inventions have been attributed to him, such as the first prototype of washing machines that existed in the world, as it was an automatic device to comply with this function that worked from energy generated by a home kitchen. He is also the responsible for the automatic car box and the so-called “inviolable lock” . On October 24, 1985 passed away in Buenos Aires at the age of 86.

Inventor by inheritance

As explained Mariana Biró on the website of the Biró Foundation, which today he directs, when recounting the life story of his father, it was his grandmother, Ladislao’s mother, who somehow inherited the qualities for the invention. This is because when the Hungarian was born he reached 2 kilos by chance, so no one thought he would survive. However, his mother devised a device for him to achieve the properties to stay alive.

“My grandmother lined a shoe box with cotton, put the baby inside and lit a lamp to heat it, in this way I think he invented the incubator “, he writes on the page. About him, he also said that “was a cultured man who studied in depth what interested him.”

The curiosity It was always part of Biró’s life , since he always tried to investigate new things and investigate unknown fields, just as he did with medicine, journalism and even hypnotism . However, he never put aside his passions such as painting and sculpture , disciplines that accompanied him until his last days. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Natural Sciences and had a great interest in ants.

The pen and other inventions

While worked as a journalist in a magazine of avant-garde of Budapest was that he was awakened the ingenuity to create the pen , since he found a problem in the continuous lack of ink and faults of the feathers that were used at that time. Thus, he wanted to devise a device that consisted of “a small sphere in a capillary tube, with a special ink that flowed by the force of gravity and dried instantly on the paper” .

The lamp came on after days trying to figure out how to create that element, when he was looking at the movement of the rollers that printed the magazine . Finally, after many obstacles and impediments, in 1938 he managed to patent his original invention in his hometown , but it was not until two years later that he arrived in Argentina thanks to the incentive of the former president of the country, Agustín P. Justo, to further develop that project.

Then, together with his friend and partner Meynes closed a business with businessmen who wanted to manufacture the product in Buenos Aires. They created the factory in which the pens began to be produced, which at that time they decided to call “birome” due to the acronym between the surnames Biró and Meynes, but later Ladislao decided to sell the rights to the United States, Europe and also to the country where they were located, so later he focused on new inventions.

“If an inventor is asked what his best invention is, he will invariably say: the next one. And so it was with Biró “, related his daughter.
