The formal request for the extradition of João Rendeiro, who was preventively detained in South Africa, has already been received in that country. In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office indicates that this request, “transmitted through diplomatic channels, was received today by the South African authorities”.
“The aforementioned request, made within the 40-day period provided for in article 16 of the European Convention on Extradition, was prepared in Portuguese with all relevant and legally required documentation and accompanied by a translation” , is detailed.
This statement indicates that the extradition request covers the three convictions against João Rendeiro (one carried unappealable and two not yet carried over) and, as well, facts related to an investigation launched in 2021 that has as its object crimes of money laundering, embezzlement, disobedience and falsification of authentic document”.
The hearing on the request for extradition of João Rendeiro was postponed this Monday, due to lack of documentation. The hearing lasted about 10 minutes and the judge at the court in Verulam, Durban, decided to postpone the session to January 21. The former banker will thus remain in preventive detention until that date.
The reason for the postponement of this session was the fact that that the South African authorities had not yet received João Rendeiro’s extradition request at that time. This documentation was sent before the deadline (January 20) and meanwhile received this Wednesday. Earlier this week, in statements quoted by the Lusa agency, prosecutor Naveen Sewparsat already indicated that the National Prosecuting Authority, the South African Public Prosecutor’s Office, expected to receive the necessary documentation this week.
João Rendeiro was on the run for three months, having been found in South Africa. The Portuguese authorities are demanding the ex-banker’s extradition so that he can serve his sentence in Portugal. The former banker was convicted in three separate cases related to the collapse of BPP, and the court found that he withdrew from the bank an amount of 13.61 million euros.
