Merdeka.com – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stressed the importance of implementing the five points of ASEAN consensus to resolve the Myanmar problem. He emphasized that ASEAN’s approach to Myanmar must be based on mutually agreed principles. This was conveyed

Jokowi during a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister (PM) of Cambodia, Hun Sen, who also holds the chairmanship of ASEAN 2022.

“Implementation of the 5-Point Consensus should not be used to support the 5-Point Roadmap of the Tatmadaw. Do not link it because it can be seen as a form of ASEAN’s support for the Myanmar military,” said Jokowi quoted in a press statement, Saturday (22/1).

On that occasion, Jokowi regretted the attitude of the Myanmar military which did not show a commitment to implementing the five points of consensus on the occasion of PM Hun Sen’s visit to Myanmar. In fact, two days after Prime Minister Hun Sen’s visit, Aung San Suu Kyi was given an additional four years’ sentence.

“And also violence is still continuing in Myanmar. This is a bad gesture and it does not respect PM Hun Sen’s efforts to push for the settlement of the Myanmar issue,” he said.

Jokowi also emphasized that the Myanmar military authorities must provide access to the special envoy of the ASEAN Chair, so that they can communicate immediately with all parties in Myanmar. Such communication is important to pave the way for an inclusive national dialogue.

“Access to all stakeholders is very important. Commitment to granting this access is also very important so that there is an agreed political solution and accepted by all parties. I am afraid that by labeling the NLD, NUG as a terrorist group, the Special Envoy will not be given access to meet them,” he explained.

Former Governor of DKI Jakarta The statement also emphasized that Indonesia remains consistent if there is no significant progress in the implementation of the five points of consensus, then Myanmar’s decision is only represented by non-political levels at ASEAN meetings, which is important to be maintained. This principle applies to the planned implementation of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat and also to other meetings. on the Minister of Foreign Affairs/special envoy of Cambodia, Foreign Minister of Brunei and Foreign Minister of Indonesia and supported by the Secretary General of ASEAN to monitor the implementation of the five consensus points. Jokowi has also noted it and conveyed that the proposal should be discussed further by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers. , AHA Center, Myanmar authorities and UN agencies. The decision was made to support the distribution of humanitarian aid without discrimination.

“I agree with Prime Minister Hun Sen that humanitarian aid must be provided without discrimination,” he said.
