Joshimath subsidence panel submits interim report

Nearly a month after the Centre set up a panel to study land subsidence in Uttarakhand‘s Joshimaththe committee recently submitted an interim report during a review held by the Prime Minister’s Office, ET has learnt.

The committee has flagged concerns about potential problems in the adjoining areas and directed the state authorities to take immediate steps, according to officials.

They said the state government was asked to take action, following which the district administration invoked sections 34 and 35 of the Disaster Management Act2005. Sections 34 and 35 empower the district authority to give directions for the release and use of resources available with any department of the government and local authority in the district.

The committee is likely to submit a final report soon and may undertake more field visits, the officials said.

The team, headed by DS Gangwarsecretary, border management, was set up after the principal secretary to the PMOPK Misra, held a high-level review on January 8 and recommended a study by experts and scientists.

As per official data, the litres per minute (LPM) of slag at Jaypee Company was recorded at 17 LPM on February 26 compared with 600 LPM on January 7. It has also been observed that nearly 900 students of classes X and XII are residing in the area and are set to take their board examinations, for which the state administration has been asked to make arrangements.

As on February 26, the administration has disbursed ₹641.75 lakh for relief work and 149 families have either moved to their relative’s homes or are staying in rented homes. According to the state disaster management authority, till February 26, some 44 locations were identified where structures were declared unsafe, affecting 846 persons.

The state and central authorities did not immediately respond to ET’s request for comment.
