JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 Movie is Exploding at Japanese Box Office

The movie Gekijō-ban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 hit theaters in Japan on December 24 and has been racking up sales. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time was the most successful film in the Japanese box office in 2021, and it made 4,934,996,800 yen (approximately $42.6 million) during its first two weeks. But Gekijō-ban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is doing better. In its first eleven days, it’s made 5,873,064,900 yen (approximately $50.69 million). During that time 4,314,027 people bought tickets to see it.
If these numbers continue, it’s possible the most successful Japanese film of 2022 is already out. It snatched the number one spot at the box office opening weekend, and during its first three days it made 2,694,128,150 yen (approximately $23.5 million). Five million copies of the booklet “Jujutsu Kaisen #0.5 Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School” have been made to give out to moviegoers. Once those numbers are reached, no more copies will be made.
The inspiration for the film comes from Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Tokyo Toritsu Jujutsu Kōtō Senmon Gakkō (translated as Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School). VIZ Media began releasing the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga early last year, and gave this description of the series:
“Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?”
The movie was animated by MAPPA and is being distributed by TOHO. It stars Megumi Ogata as Yuta Okkotsu and Kana Hanazawa as Rika Orimoto.
