Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar did not hold back as she shredded the government’s budget which was presented in the Parliament by Minister of Finance Colm Imbert on Monday.

In a conference immediately after, Persad-Bissessar described it as “long on rhetoric but short on substance” adding that “the maths not mathsing”.

Commenting on the impending property tax which Imbert stressed would increase revenue for local government, the head of the United National Congress (UNC) said the legislation would bankrupt citizens.

She added that her team plans to challenge sections of the Property Tax Act.

Moreover, she called for the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) from all basic foods.

Labelling it a “biscuit and cheese budget”, Persad-Bissessar said the cost of living will skyrocket.

She further lamented that this would lead to a growing sense of insecurity among the population.

“This is a declaration of war against the people of Trinidad and Tobago, middle class, working-class and most vulnerable,” she said.

She ended by calling on the entire cabinet to resign immediately.
