The Kazakh health ministry said on Sunday that it had not reported the number of people killed during the protests. Interfax added that the ministry had not confirmed the published information on at least 164 riots in Kazakhstan . In a statement for the news website Orda.kz, the Ministry of Health stated that data on at least 164 victims appeared on the Telegram channel, which is operated by the Ministry of Information and Social Development. This marked the publication of victim data as a “technical error”. Azattyk radio station, which is the editorial office of Radio Liberty (RFE / RL) in Kazakhstan, has meanwhile reported that three children are among the victims of the unrest: 11- and 15-year-old teenagers and a four-year-old girl. Officials have confirmed the deaths of two children. Foreign news agencies previously reported on Sunday at least 164 victims of violent protests that broke out in Kazakhstan this week, citing the latest statistics from the Kazakh authorities.Of these, 103 people are said to have died in Alma-Ate alone – the largest city in the Central Asian country. However, it was not clear from these data whether they concerned only civilian victims or whether members of the security forces were included in this number, the AP commented.
The Ministry of the Interior initially informed about 18 killed members of the security forces, but later adjusted this balance to 16 . Kazakh authorities said on Sunday evening (CET) that 5,969 people were detained during the riots. Foreigners are also reportedly among the detainees. In this connection, “125 preliminary investigations into the facts of murder, violence against government officials, robbery, hooliganism and theft have been launched,” the ministry said in a statement. The protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2 in response to a sharp rise in gas prices and soon spread from the western part of the country to other areas and locations. Economic demands immediately replaced political demands. From January 5, peaceful protests began to grow into looting, arson, occupation of office buildings, armed incidents and theft. The situation in Alma-Ate was particularly explosive
