KidSuper Fall 2022 Menswear

KidSuper’s fall 2022 short-form buddy movie is a fun 16-ish minute dive into the world of Colm Dillane, featuring a punchy cast including Princess Nokia, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Marc Jacobs. Dillane met Jacobs when they intersected through the LVMH Prize and, said the less-seasoned designer, “clicked a little bit.” Jacobs turns up for the party scene that is the film’s near-climax, wearing a horizon patched Super-suit and his trusty Rick Owens platforms. “He was super down. And the fact that he pulled up to do this video? We were blown away,” said Dillane. Other highlights include a rare fashion reference to Trixi Schuba, the entertaining but deluded suggestion Dillane resembles Nicole Kidman, and, oh yes, the clothes.

Dillane said there were around 150 pieces in the collection, which was designed both to costume the characters he cast and to widen the span of the brand. Developments this season included the suiting showcased by Jacobs and the figuratively paneled puffer jackets. These, as is KidSuper’s M.O., were all wearable canvasses that showcased Dillane’s appealing style of visual art and fondness for maximalist, lilac-licked color stories. “I think minimalism is lazy,” he observed, adding: “it’s a thing you can hide behind.”

Dillane’s exuberance both in product and personality is certainly anathema to creative austerity, whatever its motive. It is also in tune with the broader exuberance that is emerging amongst the impressively enthusiastic crowds being drawn to hang around outside the venues of the few brands that are throwing physical shows this Paris menswear week. When Dillane does finally touch down here —perhaps next season?—it will be interesting to see how he adapts his highly produced fashion filmmaking into the more confronting media that is live fashion theater.
