Korean Badminton Stars Named Best in the World

Badminton players An Se-young and Seo Seung-jae have been named the year’s best players in the world.

They were crowned female and male player of the year by the Badminton World Federation at a ceremony in Hangzhou, China on Monday.

The first Korean player to be honored was Kim Dong-moon in 2002, and the following year Kim and Ra Kyung-min were chosen, but things had been quiet since then.

But An is the first Korean player in 27 years to claim the top spot in the women’s singles world rankings. She won the All England Open Badminton Championships in March, BWF World Championships in August, and the Hangzhou Asian Games in October. From November last year to this October she won 11 titles in 16 tournaments.

“It was a challenging year, but it’s a perfect ending. It can’t get any better,” An said.

Seo performed outstandingly in mixed doubles and men’s doubles. He ranked third in the world in mixed doubles with Chae Yoo-jung and sixth in men’s doubles with Kang Min-hyuk. In the BWF World Championships, he won both mixed doubles and men’s doubles titles.
