The pool tests have been compulsory at schools in both Basel since Monday. The first numbers from the two cantons are very different.

Strong increase and stagnation
“On Monday we had over 100 pools in over 700 pools, which were ultimately positive,” says Andrea Bürki from the Baselland crisis team. For comparison: before the autumn break, there were around 20 positive pool tests a day. In the canton of Basel-Stadt, around every tenth pool comes back positive. That is about the same as before the Christmas holidays.
With 20 students per class plus teacher, this corresponds to well over 2000 tests that have to be taken in addition . A major challenge for the test capacities in the canton of Baselland. “In fact, because of the very strong and high numbers, this is of course very busy. And here we also appeal to the population that they have patience, if sometimes you cannot do the individual test directly on the day on which you get the positive pool result », says Bürki.
On request from Telebasel, the canton of Basel-Stadt writes that capacities have been reserved for depooling. However, these individual tests would not be carried out at the regular cantonal test centers, such as at the university hospital. The pool tests at the schools are definitely still mandatory in both cantons until the end of January.
Childcare facilities at schools
The canton of Baselland offers childcare for classes that are not yet in regular school operations. This also met with criticism, as the classes are mixed with each other. The canton is aware of this fact.
