The planting of summer crops is almost over, with the implantation of corn and soybeans late and second, in a strategy of delaying the dates that extends more and more and is strengthened in campaigns such as the current one marked by the presence of the La Niña phenomenon.
For producers who have not yet been able to finish sowing, the seedbed Stine Semillas offers a wide range of short and intermediate cycle options, ideal for implementations that occur at this time of year.
In the same way, the company carried out a support action, replacing the bags of those farmers who had suffered total damage to their corn lots as a result of wind storms, hail and heavy rains that occurred a few weeks ago last weeks.
In the case of maize, the hybrids ST 9734-20 and ST 9820-20, both with Agrisure Viptera® 3 technology for insect control and tolerant to glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium, have the special characteristics to be sown late, but harvested without risks of frost or other factors, such as overturning.
“The first hybrid, El Corto, maturing within 110-115 days, with a high drying rate, is highly required for these sowings so late in the areas where they need an early release for winter sowing. They tolerate very well conditions of high thermal amplitude and finish the cycle before the onset of frosts that can put grain filling at risk,” mentions Pablo Ricart, commercial manager of Stine for Argentina.
As for the other material, 9820 is a “shorty“: a hybrid of smaller size and low pin insertion, which it confers greater stability, with a strong stem, ideal for areas such as Córdoba where strong winds occur in autumn that can cause losses due to overturning.
“In this case, the Petiso has a maturity around 118 days and is a material that adapts very well to high planting densities, in addition to being very efficient in the use of nitrogen, water and in capturing light”, adds Ricart.
In general, are maize that can be planted without problems until January 15 in the core zone and the center of the country, and even above that date in the north. For this reason, they are also an excellent alternative for lots that have been planted early and were affected by hail.
In fact, in this campaign Stine has already made commercial acknowledgments to producers from Las Parejas, Armstrong, Villa Cañas, Río Cuarto and Rafaela, among other areas where they suffered damage as a result of the storms.
Soybeans
Regarding soybeans, the company MSU SA is one of the largest producers of grains in Argentina, cultivating some 150 thousand hectares per year, and in this campaign began to test the Enlist technology, in the E3 2020 seed.
“We are positioning it in batches second, especially because we believe that this triple protection against the herbicides glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium and 2,4-D, can allow us to improve the fight against weeds,” says Nicolás Ridley, head of the MSU technology area.
According to Ridley, it often happens that pre-emergents are applied and it doesn’t rain, so the herbicides lose their effectiveness. With a crop resistant to several active ingredients, it is easier to improve the control of some species such as Yuyo Colorado.
“No matter how much one burns the colorado with glyphosate after having cut it with the harvester, it is very likely that it will not be eliminated and it will be born again. If the pre-emergent did not have successful control what we expected, applying a 2,4-D in postemergence is a super interesting tool”, adds the MSU representative.
Likewise, it mentions that they are varieties with less size and number of nodes, which close the furrow earlier, and that further favors competition for water and light against weeds.
