Latin American presidents are also targets of Pandora Papers scandal

The Pandora Papers scandal affected not only Brazilian authorities, but also those linked to the government of Jair Bolsonaro. Three current presidents and no fewer than 11 who have already left their positions in Latin America have used tax havens over the years. The list is made up of 90 high-ranking politicians, religious congregations and world-renowned artists, billionaires.

The common fact that unites them is that they are all right or far right. The reports of Pandora Papers were revealed this Sunday (3). The profile of Latin Americans was published by the Spanish newspaper El País.

Fourteen of the 35 presidents or former presidents mentioned in the documents belong to Latin America. Among them, three still with mandates stand out: the Chilean Sebastián Piñera, the Ecuadorian Guillermo Lasso and the Dominican Luis Abinader.

Among the other 11 Latinos are the Colombians César Gaviria and Andrés Pastrana; the Peruvian Pedro Pablo Kuczynski; the Paraguayan Horacio Cartes; and the Panamanians Juan Carlos Varela and Ricardo Martinelli.

The sequence of reports by the International Consortium of Journalists showed, this Sunday (3), information from 11.9 million files that bring together the work of 14 consultants for offshores.

The documents, then secret, show offshore negotiations of the king of Jordan, the presidents of Ukraine, Kenya and Ecuador, the prime minister of the Czech Republic and of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

In Brazil

Among the Brazilian authorities that appear are the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, and the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto.

In Brazil, the investigation carried out by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the piauí magazine, the Poder360 and Metrópoles websites and the Agência Pública participate.
