The mood could have been better ahead of Tuesday’s exploratory talks between the German Christian Democrats (CDU / CSU) and the Green Party, which will investigate the possibilities of forming a government after the election on September 26.
On Sunday evening, the Christian Democrats and the liberal FDP met, which, like the Greens, has a key role to play in shaping the next German government. After the meeting, the newspaper Bild reported with reference to participants that the FDP had spoken positively to a so-called Jamaican coalition with Christian Democrats and Greens, something that has now provoked sharp reactions from several quarters.
This weekend’s exploratory talks, when the election winner the Social Democrats (SPD) met the FDP and the Greens separately, did not give rise to any leaks. Representatives of both the FDP and the Greens are now asking themselves whether the CDU is to be trusted.
