On the occasion of the recent -and very controversial- reform of the Transitional Statute that gives -or at least pretends give a constitutional basis to the interim term headed by Juan Guaidó, some lines of discussion have been opened where the different visions and opinions are collected about where the democratic opposition stands and where future efforts should be directed.
Due to long-standing rapprochement, we will focus our comments on the subject of the interim diplomatic service in the hope of contributing -and if possible clarifying- some perceptions born of comments and assumptions often fueled by incorrect information, whether intentional or not, that has been circulating recently about its cost versus its effectiveness.
No It takes a lot of effort to understand that the main ally of the Venezuelan opposition is the international community. without whose constant and tiresome perseverance and pressure some -of the many or few- successes that the interim could exhibit and that to a great extent are those that continue to give oxygen to the government in charge would not have been obtained.
We must also bear in mind that since February 2019, when Guaidó was sworn in, the world has experienced and continues to experience other events of crucial importance. Such is the case of the pre-war winds blowing on the Russia-Ukraine border, the unusual and confrontational polarization of the US political scene, the events in Cuba that seem to herald the winds of change, the pandemic, China’s threat to Taiwan, etc. . These events have displaced the issue of Venezuela from the international agenda, taking it from the condition of “trending topic”
to occupying positions much less priority.
However, the Venezuelan drama continues to be a determining issue both for the compatriots who remain in the country and for those more than 6 millions who have abandoned it. If that tragedy falls off the international radar, the actors who support us will soon have more visible issues to deal with. So, then: who is responsible for keeping the issue on the agenda? The “diplomats” appointed by the legitimate National Assembly. With what resources? Well, with the very limited ones that are obtained from foreign assets managed severely by an agency of the US government and from funds destined for international cooperation (specific programs) that flow through USAID.
That our diplomats have done nothing? Fake. In the United States, the embassy led by Carlos Vecchio has obtained TPS (temporary protection against deportation) that favors up to almost 300,000 compatriots in an irregular migratory situation; in Colombia, it has been possible to regularize the migration of more than 1 million; in Peru something similar, in other countries things are more difficult but relief is achieved, in Canada the same, and even in Argentina and Spain where the governments of the day are hostile to us there are also representatives watching over the compatriots with the many or few arguments that may have at their disposal. Could it be that these achievements came from the top hat of some magician? Does the presence in the OAS, in the IDB, the pressures before the continental and universal human rights organizations, etc., come by themselves or by the coordinated effort of those who dedicate their time and often their resources to it?
Respected opinion makers and some others, perhaps with perverse intention, have ventured expenditure figures whose dimension we are not in a position to endorse or deny. For this very reason, there is an urgent need to require a scrupulous and transparent rendering of accounts from all those in the interim that serves to put things in their place and to put an end to the perception – as widespread as it is mistaken – that those who have these tasks They carry them out with comforts, luxuries, discretionary expenses, drivers and other benefits that usually correspond to the professional diplomatic corps that are part of foreign ministries and are nourished by the national budget of the State they represent. There will be –and there are- those who do not honor that patriotic commitment. To them public repudiation and criminal law, but from this column we demand prudence and restraint before throwing efforts and names to shame.
