The new American ambassador in Bern is Scott Miller. The 41-year-old philanthropist and LGBTQ activist from Denver, Colorado was nominated by President Joe Biden in August and approved by the Senate on Saturday. He replaces Ed McMullen, who was appointed by former President Trump and served as US ambassador from fall 2017 to early 2021.
In addition to Miller, the Senate confirmed more than 50 other Biden candidates as new ambassadors for the United States around the world. Including the former mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, as ambassador to Japan. Emanuel, former White House chief of staff under President Barack Obama, lost support in his party in 2014 due to his handling of the police shots at the black teenager Lacquan McDonald.
Activist with a connection to Switzerland
Miller was one of Joe Biden’s supporters in the election campaign. He advised his campaign, organized fundraisers in Colorado and made donations for the Democrats himself. Hailing from conservative Colorado, Miller has made a name for himself as an advocate for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer people (LGBTQ).
Miller also has references to Switzerland in his résumé. He worked as vice president of the wealth management division at the major UBS bank in Denver. In a statement following his nomination in August, he said that if the Senate confirmed, he wanted to consolidate the “already strong partnership that connects the Americans with the Swiss and Liechtensteiners, including the dynamic relationships in trade, investment and arms issues ».
