Life-threatening “Challenge” voice assistant asks girls to get an electric shock
Slight outcome: Fortunately, a ten-year-old girl did not meet the challenge of “Alexa”. A severe electric shock would have resulted.
Opinions differ on “Alexa”, Amazon’s voice assistant . Nevertheless, the virtual helper is a popular “partner” in many households when it comes to playing music, answering questions or – as in the specific case from the USA – devising special challenges.
Electronic tool with hazard potential
The story of “Alexa’s” challenge proposal became known because Kristin Livdahl reported about it on her Twitter account. The versatile woman, who writes children’s books and is committed to animal and nature conservation, wrote from her own experience that it was about her daughter. The girl had asked “Alexa”
Problematic challenges
As “bbc.com” writes, the online shipping giant Amazon immediately updated “Alexa” so that the same thing does not happen again. “Customer trust is at the heart of everything we do, and Alexa is designed to provide customers with accurate, relevant and helpful information,” it said in a statement.
Kristin had written that they had “done some physical challenges from a trainer on YouTube” prior to their daughter’s challenge on December 21, 2021. The weather was bad, so the little one wanted to be given a new task.
Alexa’s dangerous suggestion came from the Internet
Apparently “Alexa” had researched the net and found the “Penny Challenge”. As “bbc.com” explains, this unhealthy activity has haunted various social media websites for about a year. Those who engage in the experiment run the risk of electric shocks and burns because the metal of the coin conducts the electricity. The website refers to the English firefighter Michael Clusker, who already assessed in 2020: “I know that you can lose fingers, hands and arms”. Officials of the US fire department have also spoken out clearly against the challenge.
Kristin was very worried
Kristin tweeted that she had yelled at Alexa like a naughty dog: “No, Alexa, no!” But her daughter is too smart anyway to get involved in such a questionable action.
