Linux Mint is one of the most popular distributions for Linux in recent years and combines an Ubuntu base with different environments, as well as its own applications. As of June 2020,
Last week, Linux Mint 20.3 was released with new features and now, the operating system has partnered with Mozilla to maintain Firefox as your default browser.
Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu and uses its repositories , but Canonical, the company responsible for the operating system, had switched from Firefox to a Snap package in the 21.10 update last year.
While Snap packages are generally more secure than non-containerized Linux software, not everyone likes to use them. The Linux Mint project in particular fought Snap and cited Canonical’s lack of transparency in addition to a centralized nature.
Via In a blog post, Linux Mint announced that it has signed a new commercial and development agreement with Mozilla that will keep Firefox as its default browser.
Linux Mint will continue to distribute Firefox through software repositories as a .deb package, as it currently works and on Ubuntu before version 21.10, without using Snap.
However, all customizations that Linux Mint added to Firefox will be removed, the start page will no longer be linuxmint.com/start and the search tool will revert to the Google.
The blog post states:
For Mozilla, the goal is to make Firefox work the same on all platforms to ease maintenance, ease development and bug fixes. With these changes, Firefox will provide the same experience on Linux Mint as it does on other operating systems.”
The Firefox browser update is now available in Linux Mint 20.3 and will be released for 19.x, 20.x and Debian-based LMDE with the release of Firefox 96.
In November of last year, Mozilla has announced the end of support for the Lockwise password manager app.
