Thanks to its French goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who stopped a penalty in the 71st minute, Rayo Vallecano eliminated Girona (Spanish D2) on Saturday (1-2) and will find the quarters of King’s Cup final twenty years after his last appearance. Colombian defender Bernardo opened the scoring in the 26th minute for the Catalans, then Sergi Guardiola, established in place of Radamel Falcao, put Rayo back in front with a double (45th + 1, 48th).

In the 71st minute, while Uruguayan striker Christian Stuani had the opportunity to equalize on penalty, Luca Zidane stopped his attempt and was congratulated by all his team-mates. The match was tainted by a red card sent to Girona midfielder Gabri Martinez in stoppage time (90th + 8).

Rayo’s last appearance in the quarter-finals Copa del Rey final dates back to January 8, 2002: players from the suburbs of the Spanish capital lost out to their neighbour, Real Madrid (4-0 defeat in the first leg with goals from Roberto Carlos, Raul, Zinédine Zidane and Luis Figo, and 1-0 success on the return).
