Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle: Player ratings as Magpies condemn Red Devils to fourth straight defeat

Newcastle piled the misery on Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as they condemned the Red Devils to a fourth-straight defeat on Monday night.

The signs were ominous from the get-go as Newcastle instantly asserted themselves on the contest and took no more than three minutes to open the scoring. Alexander Isak scored for the sixth consecutive Premier League game as he headed home Lewis Hall’s cross without a challenge.

The visitors’ midfield has developed into arguably the division’s best, and United’s ageing pivot had no answers. Newcastle were utterly dominant, and Isak missed a great chance to double their lead before Joelinton ulitmately did 19 minutes in.

The withdrawal of Joshua Zirkzee after the 30-minute mark was a damning indictment of United’s sorry display (and Amorim’s odd team selection), but the hosts did have a couple of glimmers towards the end of the first half. Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro both spurned good chances to get the Red Devils back into the game out of nothing.

There was greater serenity in the second period as United finally got a foothold in the contest and had more sights of Martin Dubravka’s goal. Harry Maguire hit the post and Matthijs de Ligt had a goal-bound effort blocked in the same sequence before substitute Leny Yoro headed just wide from Christian Eriksen’s corner.

Despite the upsurge, Newcastle were able to keep the Red Devils at arm’s length and they were able to hold on with relative comfort to a rare league victory at Old Trafford – just their third since 1972.

Chelsea’s defeat at Ipswich means Eddie Howe’s side are just three points adrift of the fourth-placed Blues.
